Just one week before the online betting favorite Players Championship tournament, the PGA swings into Charlotte, North Carolina for the Wachovia Championship at the challenging Quail Hollow Country Club. Last year Tiger Woods won it and grabbed the blue jacket by holding off Steve Stricker in a wild final round eventually beating him by two strokes. Tiger’s four round total last year of -13 was the lowest score in the 5-year history of the event but someone else will take the title this year as Tiger recovers from knee surgery.
So with the world’s number one golfer out, others like Phil Mickelson have a chance, who is this week’s favorite at 9/1. His only win this year came at the Northern Trust Open more than 3 months ago.
Adam Scott 12/1 fresh off his first win of the season last week at the Byron Nelson looks to carry over his hot hand. It should be more than just his argyle sweater that you remember from last week; more so the way he won with that huge 48 foot putt on the 3rd playoff hole to beat Ryan Moore. Scott could be hot again this week.
Vijay Singh and Jim Furyk are both 14/1 and both have won this tournament before. In his last five starts at the Wachovia, Vij hasn’t missed a cut and only once has finished outside the top-10 winning it in 2005 and was a runner up in 2003. Vij is also the all-time money winner at this tournament with more than 1.8 million but has yet to win a single tournament this year. As for Furyk, his game seems to fit well on this course and he’s hunting for his first win of the season as well, with only one top-5 finish in 11 starts this season.
Steve Stricker 25/1 was battling with Tiger into the final round last year but will have to get his game going to keep up with this field this week.
Two week ago Boo Weekly won the Verizon Heritage and took last week off for a hunting trip, but is back to play this week and is 40/1 to win it all.
David Toms a former winner at the Wachovia but is a long shot at 85/1 this week.
My sleeper pick is Fredrik Jacobson at 90/1
