Tiger Woods will take a break from golf this weekend, and instead spend his time savoring the victory he picked up on Sunday in the 2007 Masters at Augusta National.
Whoops, that’s what happens when you write your golf story too far in advance. It’s actually Zach Johnson who is savoring a Masters victory this week, and he won’t be taking time off – he’ll be in the field for the Verizon Heritage at Harbour Town Golf Links in Hilton Head, South Carolina. However, he’s not pegged as the favorite this weekend.
In fact, Johnson is farther down the list at +4000 odds to be victorious at Hilton Head on Sunday. Of course, he was pretty far down the odds list to win The Masters as well, and that turned out fine for him. Johnson ended up two strokes ahead of Woods, Retief Goosen, and Rory Sabbatini after shooting 3-under on the final day of the tournament.
The field for the Verizon Heritage won’t be quite as tough, although many of the world’s top golfers will be in attendance. Jim Furyk is currently listed as the tournament favorite at +1000 odds, followed closely by Ernie Els at +1200. Third on the current odds list is Davis Love III, who has won this event a record five times (2003, 1998, 1992, 1991, and 1987). Two-time winner Stewart Cink (2004, 2000) is sitting at +2500.
Aaron Baddeley won this tournament last year, beating Furyk by a single stroke to grab his first-ever PGA win; he’s at +3000 odds to repeat as champion. Other past winners in the field this week are Justin Leonard and Jose Coceres. Leonard, the 2002 champion, is way back at +7000 odds, while Coceres, the 2001 champ, is pegged at +5000 odds.
Contenders’ odds have also been given to Geoff Ogilvy (+2000), Justin Rose (+2200), and Trevor Immelman (+2800). Here are the rest of the top odds for the tournament.
