Given last year’s four-stroke win and a seven-stroke victory here in 2002, K.J. Choi is certainly a big fan of this Tampa Bay, Florida, track. Ranked 24th in the FedEx Cup this season, Choi started out strong with an 8th-place result in the season-opening Mercedes-Benz and a 4th-place finish the next week in Hawaii. Since then, Choi has been clawing his way back from a disastrous 65th-place finish at Pebble Beach; most recently coming in 17th in the World Golf Championship Match Play tournament.

Vijay Singh won here in ’04 and finished second the season before. He would love to bounce back from his 19th-place result last season. Ranked third this season in the cup race, Singh started off with a win but has only one Top-10 to show for the seven tournaments he has entered this season (7th-place, FBR Open).

Brett Wetterich and Paul Goydos finished second to Choi last season. Having won the Sony Open earlier this year, Goydos is a good bet this weekend. Wetterich has missed two cuts this season and has failed to best his 22nd-place finish in the season-opener.

Jesper Parnevik tied for sixth place last season. However, this year his best finish this season is 28th while he has failed to make four of six cuts.

FedEx Cup Leader Charles Howell III must be considered a contender with the more disciplined approach he has taken this season. With two 2nd-place finishes (Sony Open and Buick Invitational) and a win (Nissan Open) on his resume this season, few players in the field have a similar resume this season.

Camilo Villegas, who missed three of the four cuts he has faced this season, put together a surprising effort last weekend in the Honda Classic. He and Boo Weekley, ranked 102nd and 82nd, respectively, in the FedEx Cup, were two of the four players who had to battle through last week’s sudden death playoff. Weekley missed three of five cuts this season but last week’s effort for him followed a 6th-place finish the week before in Mexico. Villegas and Weekley will be eager to show that their recent success is no fluke but their overall season results are not compelling.

Finally, keep an eye on John Rollins, who has two second-place finishes this season (Bob Hope Classic and FBR Open) and is eager to claim his first victory this season.

Neither Tiger Woods nor Phil Michelson are entered in the field this weekend.
