The PGA Championship is approaching in the coming weeks, and becomes one of the last events for players to vault themselves up the FedEx Cup Standings. Tiger Woods dominated the field last year in an outstanding performance to claim the victory at Medinah Country Club. He also dominates the golf betting lines in the BetUS sportsbook as a huge +275 favourite. Can Tiger repeat or will someone from the field be hoisting the Wanamaker Trophy at the end of the weekend?
The final leg of the PGA Tour’s Grand Slam will draw the biggest name in the game. Tiger Woods will be there to defend against Vijay Singh (+2500) and Phil Mickelson (+1200), who the PGA Championship in 2006 and 2005, respectively. Also noteworthy is Retief Goosen (+2800), who won the U.S Open in 2001, which was also held at the storied Southern Hills Country Club.
This year’s event takes place at the prestigious Southern Hills Country Club in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Southern Hills, outside of hosting six majors (three U.S Open, three PGA Championships), is noted as being the cornerstone of Perry Maxwell’s incredible life story.
The 7,021 yard course is an incredibly difficult course to play. Despite the unbearable heat and the difficult angles of the course, the pressure created by the PGA Championship itself makes it a stressful test for even the best PGA golfers. That is why the smart money sits in the corner of players who have shown resiliency under tremendous pressure in the recent past.
Perry Maxwell also intended Southern Hills to have some of the toughest greens in the world. They are noted for having dramatic and bold contours, so bump all the strong putters up the list when you are looking for golfers to bet on. Steve Stricker is easily one of the best putters on the tour, and could be a sleeper worthy of note.
Tiger Woods remains the undeniable favourite, and for good reason. The majors cause a tremendous amount of stress, which makes golfers like Sergio Garcia (+2800) virtually impossible to have faith in when placing your hard earned money.
Other favourites, as I said earlier, include Vijay, Phil and Goosen. A lot of experts will be trying to sway people towards Luke Donald’s (+4000) sweet swing, but he does not have the nuts to carry the load yet. Jim Furyk (+1600), who has been putting together a great season thus far, is someone worth keeping an eye on.
Big eyes will be on Zach Johnson (+5000), who won The Masters, this year, but his putting is not strong or consistent enough for him to be a major force at the PGA Championship. Angel Cabrera (+5000), who won the U.S. Open, is basically the luckiest golfer of the year and not worthy of solidified faith. Padraig Harrington (+2500) recently overcame the odds to win The British Open, but he has never fared very well in the USA.

Though Tiger is not a definite lock for the victory, the only thing for certain is that this year’s PGA Championship is going to be a boiler room of pressure under the hot Oklahoma sun.
