British Open - Going into the Weekend, It’s Anybody’s to Win

Bookmark and Share by D.S. Williamson

There is still some golf to play on this Friday, the second day of the British Open, but a few things are sure things.

One sure thing is that the play of Tom Watson continues to be downright amazing. After the first 7 holes, our dear Watson was +4 for the day. Now, at the end of 18 he is even par for the day to bring him to -5 and into a tie for the lead with Steve Marino.

Who else has impressed on Friday? Besides Marino and Watson, the man to watch is Mark Calcavecchia who finished the day at -4. Calvacchia and Watson make a who’s who of late 1970’s, early 1980’s golf heroes.

But Marino, Watson and Calcavecchia aren’t the only players who look to have a shot this weekend. Even though there is some golf to play on Friday, all of these players are within 3 shots of the lead: Ross Fisher, Retief Goosen, Miguel Angel Jimenez, Vijay Singh, JB Holmes, James Kingston, Kenichi Kuboya.

Only Sergio Out of Big Three Steps Up

The Big Three of Tiger Woods, Padraig Harrington and Sergio Garcia haven’t lived up to expectations so far in this 2009 British Open with only Sergio being able to make a dent at finishing the second round with a -1. Sergio is 4 strokes off of the lead.

Padraig? After shooting a respectable 69 on Thursday, Harrington shot a 74 on Friday to finish at +3. He’ll make the cut, but it looks like his streak of British Open victories is over.

Tiger? The wheels are off as El Tigre is working on a 7 over for the day and is in danger of missing the cut.

Bad Times for Good Golfers

The list of who will miss the cut in this year’s British Open is a list of some of he top golfers on the PGA Tour.

Both Lucas Glover, the winner of the 2009 U.S. Open and Hunter Mahan, the 5th place finisher in that Major will miss the cut. Glover finishes Friday at +9. Mahan finished Friday at +11.

Those two weren’t the only ones who blew it. Ben Curtis had one of the most memorable collapses in recent British Open history when he followed up his Thursday 65, which had him in contention, with a Friday 80. Paul Casey followed up his 68 on Thursday with a 76 on Friday and Mark O’Meara is already 7 over on Friday after his fantastic 67 on Thursday.

Then, there’s Anthony Kim who has shot back to back 73s in the British Open and won’t make the cut either.

Now it’s on to the weekend where the real championship golf starts!
