109th U.S. Open - Glover Brings it Home

When it was all said and done, after five straight days, the winner of the 2009 U.S. Open is Lucas Glover.

It wasn’t easy for Glover who started the Monday’s final round in the last pairing with Ricky Barnes. Barnes who had an 11 under at one time on Sunday, couldn’t keep it together later on in the third round or fourth round and ended up finishing tied for second with David Duval and Phil Mickelson.

Even with the two horrible rounds, Ricky Barnes had a chance on the 18th hole on Monday to get with a stroke of Glover. His birdie shot was hit perfectly and burned the edge but just didn’t drop.

It wouldn’t have mattered as Glover played a terrific final round and finished with a par on the 18th. Glover takes home the U.S. Open trophy by doing what it takes to win a Major - - playing consistent golf for all four rounds.

Duval and Mickelson Made A Charge

David Duval and Phil Mickelson made terrific charges in the final round on Monday. Duval did well enough to tie both Mickelson and Glover at -3 before Glover birdied the 16th. Duval bogeyed the 17th and ended up finishing tied for second.

Phil Mickelson actually was tied alone with Glover at -4 at one point during the final round. He too had a terrific shot to win the U.S. Open but after bogeys on 17 and 18, Lefty ended up finishing tied for 2nd as well. Still, it was a fantastic tournament for Lefty who now will concentrate on his personal life as his wife Amy is battling breast cancer.

Tiger Never Got on Track

Tiger Wood never really made a move up the leader board. He had some chances in the third and fourth rounds, but overall, Tiger had a tournament that wasn’t reminiscent of the best golfer in the world.

Things started out tough for Tiger as he had to play when the conditions were absolutely horrible on Thursday. Then, he had to finish his 1st round when the conditions were bad again. You won’t hear any excuses out of Woods though who fully admits that he just didn’t have it during this U.S. Open.

Now, the best golfers in the world will turn their attention to the British Open where not only Tiger Woods and last year’s British Open winner, Padraig Harrington, will try to bounce back and prove their worth overseas, but the 2009 U.S. Open winner, Lucas Glover, will try to put another Major onto his resume.

Congratulations to Lucas Glover, the 109th U.S. Open Champion!
