Boxing Sneak Peak - Devon Alexander is the Future

Fans of boxing betting will get a peak at possibly the future of the sport on Saturday night during SHOWTIME’s highly-anticipated August 1 card. Those who passionately follow boxing odds may already be familiar with his name, but for those who aren’t, he is sure to make an impression quickly.

Devon Alexander, just eighteen fights into his professional career, will take on Junior Witter for the WBC light welterweight title on Saturday. As HBO scoops up hot prospects such as Victor Ortiz, SHOWTIME is countering with an equally as exciting young clubber in Alexander. Contrary to Ortiz however, who is a pedal-to-the-metal brawler, Alexander is a classic boxer, who will satisfy the needs of boxing betting purists out there.

Trained by esteemed cornerman Kevin Cunningham, Alexander is part of the Spinks camp, including Cory, a current world champion himself. Much like the Spinks clan, “The Great” is an evasive southpaw, who very rarely puts himself into any danger, and as such, very rarely gets hit. This Saturday, he is favored at -200 on boxing lines against Junior Witter, perhaps for that very reason.

Witter is a very irritable personality, a hothead. Over the past few weeks, he has been fuming about Ricky Hatton, Amir Khan and others, seemingly for no reason. He has also turned in dismal performances against Zab Judah and Timothy Bradley (who will headline the card against Nate Campbell), which were attributed to a lack of concentration. The British light welterweight is very unorthodox in the ring, and as those who bet on boxing saw when Ricardo Mayorga met up with Cory Spinks, that doesn’t always work well against a good defensive fighter!

Stylistically, this is Alexander’s match to lose. If he manages to stay on the outside, and dictate the angles and distance, boxing bettors can expect an easy 12-round decision. However, his inexperience could prove to be a factor. Alexander did not look great in his last outing against veteran Jesus “Chuey” Rodriguez, though most have labeled it “just a bad night.” Say what you will about Witter, but he has many years of experience in championship tilts under his belt, and that is invaluable inside the squared circle.

Being as he is fighting on home soil, boxing betting experts should expect Alexander to be in fine form, and to make Witter pay for his very evident lack of focus during the pre-fight dealings.
