Week 5 NFL Odds - New York Jets vs. New York Giants

by Charles Jay

The relationship between the New York Jets and New York Giants is unique in the NFL because both teams call the same stadium home. On Sunday (1 PM Eastern time) on the artificial turf of Giants Stadium in East Rutherford, NJ, these two clubs get together in a rare matchup. In the NFL betting odds at BetUS, the Giants are listed at -3.5, with an over/under number posted at 41. It should be noted that the Giants are the home team, which means their season-ticket holders will be the ones in attendance.

The Jets went to the playoffs last season in Eric Magini's first year as head coach. Currently they are sporting a record of 1-3 SU (straight-up) and 1-2-1 ATS (against the spread). The last time the Jets were in action, they lost as a three-point road favorite to the banged-up Buffalo Bills, by the score of 17-14.

The Giants are 2-2 across the board - SU and ATS, and also in the over-under category. But after taking it on the chin from Dallas and Green Bay in the season's first two games, the Giants have been moving in a more positive direction, winning against Washington and Philadelphia. They beat the Eagles last Sunday night 16-3 as a 2.5-point home dog, in a contest that just barely cracked the 400-yard combined offense mark.

In the HEAD-TO-HEAD football betting trends:

* Giants are 4-2-1 ATS in the last seven against the Jets

* Giants are 5-2 SU in the last seven meetings

Actually, these teams have met just once in the 21st century, with the Giants scoring a 31-28 win in November of 2003, forcing a push, as they were three-point favorites.

The Jets are getting solid play from quarterback Chad Pennington, who is #5 in the NFL's quarterback ratings, hitting 77% of his passes with just two INT's. Pennington has had ankle problems, though, and so Kellen Clemens has gotten playing time as well. The Jets have rushed for 82.5 yards a game, and the acquisition of Thomas Jones, who's had just one 100-yard game, has not been explosive. The Jets are giving up almost eight more points per game than they are scoring, and are close to the bottom of the league which just three QB sacks thus far. Also:

* Jets have covered five of their last seven on the road

* Jets are only 6-14 SU their last 20 road games

* Under Eric Mangini, the Jets are 6-0 ATS when coming off a SU & ATS loss

* Under Eric Mangini, the Jets are 6-1-1 ATS when coming off a SU loss

The Giants have given up only 20 points in their last two games after surrendering 80 in the first two. And the defense, which was torched for 846 combined yards to the Cowboys and Packers, gave up just 450 against the Redskins and Eagles. The Giants are now tied with Chicago for the league lead in sacks with 16, and Derrick Ward has filled in nicely at running back after Brandon Jacobs went down, gaining 353 yards on 4.8 yards per carry. Jacobs hopes to be back in action this week. Also:

* Giants have covered four of their last six games

* Giants are just 4-9 SU in their last 13 games

* Giants have covered just two of their last seven games at home

* Giants have won just one of their last six home games SU

*Ten of the last 13 Giants home games have gone under the total

* In the month of October, the Giants are 0-6 ATS at home against a non-division opponent coming off a SU & ATS loss

Certainly the technical numbers indicate the Jets are pretty good at bouncing back from defeat under Mangini. But the stat trends indicate the Giants, the 3.5-point favorite in the BetUS NFL betting line, are playing better football right now.
