Preview

Both teams are trying to keep pace with the offensive juggernaut that is the Dallas Cowboys, so this Monday Night Football game between two NFC East rivals will be imperative to both teams. The Redskins look sharper than everyone expected, while Philladelphia stumbled against the Packers. Is Jason Campbell the real deal, or is Donavan McNabb ready to unleash a huge game? Let’s check it out in our NFL betting preview.

Washington Offense vs. Philadelphia Defense

The Redskins running game takes center stage in prime time as Clinton Portis and Ladell Betts look to expose an inexperienced linebacker unit. The ‘Skins love to stretch the run game to the outside edges, taking the Philly front four out of the pursuit and pressuring the linebackers to do the work. Philly’s front seven was vulnerable against Green Bay, and Washington has a much better offensive line.

Jason Campbell did not look great in his opening tilt against the Miami Dolphins. Randle El’s hail Mary catch off a tipped ball seriously skewed Campbell’s 222 passing yards. But his two picks show just how bad his decision making was. The Washington offense will circulate around the running game, keeping the score low and the Philly offense off the field.

Philadelphia Offense vs. Washington Defense

The linebackers and secondary in Washington are aggressive and destructive with Sean Taylor and LaRon Landry moving up in run coverage. Unfortunately the front four for the ‘Skins is weak, and will be overpowered by a big, bad offensive line in Philly. That gives Westbrook a chance to shine in this game as long as he can beat the safeties blitz in coverage more often then not.

McNabb will take shots at this secondary, even though it would be ill advised. He is still developing chemistry with Kevin Curtis who was overthrown a few times for big plays against Green Bay. Fred Smoot and Shawn Springs will be stuck in man coverage as the blitz-happy Redskins shoot their safeties into the backfield. Luckily, Reggie Brown and Curtis are not true number one guys and will have to play huge to beat this secondary.

McNabb and the Eagles looked pedestrian against a formidable Packers defense and Washington’s is no cake walk either. McNabb is a smart, intelligent quarterback and you can bet that this weekend he will be able to hit those big plays.

Football Betting Trends

-Washington is 1-4-1 ATS in its last 6 games on the road

-total has gone UNDER in Washington’s last 7 games against Philadelphia

-total has gone UNDER in 4 of Philadelphia’s last 5 games

-Philadelphia is 2-3-1 ATS in its last 6 games at home

Final Verdict

If Philadelphia hadn’t muffed two kick returns, Green Bay wouldn’t have been in that game. There is no doubt that Andy Reid grilled the special teams unit all week in preparation for a big game. I like both defenses in this game, but the Iggles have the better offense and they are the team the smart betting investor should have faith in.

Portis and Betts need to have a massive game, but Reid will keep throwing to light up the scoreboard. Bet on Kevin Curtis finally having the big game the Philadelphia Eagles are paying him for as the passing attack takes advantage of the Redskins man coverage. Jason Campbell just isn’t trustworthy when it comes to your hard earned, NFL betting money.
