UFC 65 Fighter Profile - Tim "The Maniac" Sylvia

UFC Fighter Profile - Tim Sylvia

Simply put, Tim Sylvia is a monster. At 6’8’’ and 265 lbs, he’s one of the biggest dudes in the business. After leaving his hometown of Maine to train in Iowa with Pat Miletich, Sylvia has worked on his boxing and grappling style – using his size and weight to his advantage.

After his professional debut he went on to pound out 13 straight victories, including 10 knockouts. Like a lot of heavyweights, Sylvia relies on power and strength. As you can imagine, with his size, he is usually fighting with a big advantage in height, reach, and weight. He’s fairly quick and defends well against takedown attacks.

Sylvia is strongest on his feet and packs a powerful punch. The “Maine-iac” is 24-2-0 and has been fighting since 2001. Fighters need to watch out for his big right hand. His arm is now complete with titanium plates after it was fractured in multiple places in a fight with Frank Mir (while the ref was calling the fight Sylvia tried to keep fighting).

He’s a strong, relentless competitor that, by virtue of size, brings an air of intimidation to the octagon.

It’s not only fighters that need to fear this man, or even humans. Sylvia is an avid hunter and, according to his blog, he’s currently filming for an upcoming hunting DVD. We can only assume he’s hunting them with guns and not his bare hands (although that would make for a crazy video). I’m sure, however, the DVD he’s most concerned with will be the one being filmed on November 18th – UFC 65 Bad Intentions and his Heavyweight Title defense.

Sylvia will be facing Jeff “The Snowman” Monson and will be hoping to extend his winning streak to 6. To do so, experts feel that he needs to keep the fight standing for as long as possible – relying on his strength and reach to keep it there.

This will be his second title defense since regaining it against Andrei Arlovski in April of this year. Sylvia fought Arlovski again at UFC 61 to prove that the first victory was not a fluke. Tim will hope to carry on that momentum into another defense that will add onto his win column.
