UFC 65 Fighter Profile - Georges St. Pierre

UFC Fighter Profile - Georges St. Pierre

At 25 years old, Canadian fighter Georges St. Pierre is a rising force in the UFC. He is young, athletic and well-rounded. Having only lost once (with a 12-1 record) St. Pierre is the definite #1 welterweight contender.

He began his training in karate at the age of 6 to defend himself against bullies. Hmmm, I willing to bet that he doesn’t worry too much about bullies anymore. St. Pierre currently trains with the Canadian National Wrestling Team and the Triumph Fight Team. His karate roots are rounded out with Mui Thai, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and wrestling.

St. Pierre is a dedicated trainer who has been fighting like he’s got a lot to prove. His ground and pound is ferocious while he remains quick on his feet – in a recent interview GSP said that he even practices his footwork out in the club.

Coming off of a slight groin pull injury that postponed the upcoming Welterweight title fight, St. Pierre looks strong and ready for the biggest match of his career.

Fighting out of Montreal, St. Pierre could be the fresh new face of the UFC if he knocks legend Matt Hughes out of the title position. He would become only the second Canadian to hold a UFC title – after Carlos Newton.

Beating Matt Hughes will be a tall order; after all, Georges’ only loss came at the hands of a first round armbar from Hughes in ’04. Since then, however, St. Pierre has had wins over Jason Miller, Frank Trigg, Sean Sherk and BJ Penn

Those victories have done a lot for St. Pierre’s mental game which promises to be stronger than his first title match in 2004. He’s older, stronger, faster and confident. He stirred the pot at UFC 63 by publicly calling out Hughes and stating that he was “not impressed” by the victory over Penn. This appears to be an attempt to engage in some of the mind games that Hughes is famous for, but keeping up with his polite Canadian image, St. Pierre later went on to apologize.

St. Pierre hasn’t fought since his fight against Penn in March, so his training has been geared to this upcoming match on November 18th in Sacramento. He’s got a legitimate shot at the title and will be bringing it all into the ring.
