Match Time: Start at 7PM Eastern Time on Friday January 18, 2008

Tennis Betting Line: Roger Federer -10000 Janko Tipsarevic +1800

Tennis Prediction: While betting on Federer to win may be somewhat passé, betting against Federer at this stage of the tournament is premature. Federer is at the top of his game, despite missing both warm-up events prior to the Australian Open. In his first two matches, Federer has dropped a total of six games, three against Diego Hartfield and three against Fabrice Santoro. Clearly, Federer plays in a league of his own for who can enter a Grand Slam event with such effortless ease, but the maestro of tennis himself. Federer’s whopping price tag speaks for itself.

Tennis Free Pick: Federer in straight sets

Tennis Betting Line: Novak Djokovic -1600 Sam Querrey +700

Tennis Prediction: Up-and-coming American Sam Querrey has fallen into one of the toughest sections of the draw. Querrey, who ranks No.62 in the World, has enjoyed a good run thus far, entering the third round, but with the prospect of facing Djokovic next, his Australian Open campaign looks to be all but over. (In 2007, Querrey arrived at this very same stage, only to lose to Tommy Robredo in four sets.) Even the bookies have little faith in his ability to orchestrate the upset, pricing him long at +700. It is unfortunate for the young American talent, but a necessary lesson in the maturation process. Of course, the balance of power can shift at any given time, making the impossible possible. That being said, betting on Querrey is a risk; the safe bet is Novak Djokovic at -1600.

Tennis Free Pick: Djokovic in four sets.

Tennis Betting Line: Juan Monaco +225 Tomas Berdych -350

Tennis Prediction: I would be delighted to wager with confidence on No.13 Tomas Berdych, the bookies favourite at -350, but while the young Czech is loaded with talent, he has yet to deliver on that future promise. The present seems to catch up with the future, but somehow leaves Berdych behind. Is it a lack of confidence, not enough maturation or an Inability to rise to the occasion? It is not clear, but something has held back Berdych for his results do not merit the hype. However, rumblings from his camp have promised this is the year—Berdych’s year to establish himself firmly in the Top 10. If this is the case, then his third round contest against up-and-coming Argentinean sensation Juan Monaco is more than appropriate. Monaco, who ranks No.23 in the World, is poised to crack the Top 20 or better yet, possibly carve a nook for himself in the Top 10. There is no doubt Berdych should win this match, but Monaco is capable of the upset.

Tennis Free Pick: Berdych in 5 sets.
