Although Safin has struggled this year and he faces a Top 20 player in No.11 Berdych, he recently defeated the Czech player in Davis Cup action for Russia. The match was an instant classic – a five-set marathon that saw Safin battle back from two-sets down to win 6-7(5), 4-6, 6-3, 6-2, 6-4. Although national competition carries different weight, his result is nevertheless encouraging. At Even odds, he is a good play for the win. Berdych, although favored at -140, is not a sure play. A promising talent, he has yet to deliver on all the hype that has preceded him.

Tennis Prediction: Gilles Simon claimed a victory over the Scot, Andy Murray at the ATP Masters Series in Rome last year. This year, they meet in the second round of another Masters event; and with a 1-0 edge, the Frenchman, Simon would appear to hold more value. Last week in Rome, Simon reached the second round, after beating No.17 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the R64.
It is no secret: but Murray is not known for clay-court proficiency. Well, he is not bad, but he is not great either. In three tournaments thus far, he has posted a third round and two second round appearances. Long touted as Britain’s future talent, Murray has not been playing well on clay. He should advance into the next round, but don’t be surprised if his clay court woes continue.

With a 2-1 edge over the No.78 ranked player, Moya’s odds of extending his winning streak in Hamburg improved and he has a golden opportunity to reach the third round of a clay court event, something he has not done since reaching the final in Costa do Sauipe.

Tennis Prediction: Clay court King and 2007 Hamburg runner-up, Rafael Nadal, is set to take centre court tomorrow for the first time since his title defence campaign in Rome bombed in the first round. Nadal suffered from severe blisters – a result of playing on the gruelling red stuff week-upon-week in his quest to defend three back-to-back clay court titles. Due to the Olympics, the clay court season was significantly shortened, making the task that much more difficult for the Spaniard. He successfully defended two before suffering only his second loss on clay in over 100 matches! Clearly, he should bounce back. Therefore, after a week of rest I expect Nadal will begin his Hamburg campaign in winning fashion.
