Analysis:

Betting Verdict: Home court advantage goes to Argentina, making them the favourites to advance from this tie. Argentine Davis Cup captain Alberto Mancini has selected his country’s top player David Nalbandian, along with wingman Jose Acasuso to lead his nation to glory in the first two rubbers on opening day. While it is no surprise, No.7 Nalbandian was called to kick off the action for Argentina; the decision to put No.40 Acasuso in the second rubber may be surprising to some. But Acasuso, who ranks well below No. 17 Juan Monaco and No.24 Guillermo Canas, has had a solid start to his year and in the end, I expect Mancini’s decision to be a stroke of shrewd machination.

Nalbandian will take on Swedish No. 2 Thomas Johansson in their first meeting on clay. The 33-year-old Swede has won two of the previous three matches, including a four-set victory in their last meeting in the '07 quarterfinal tie. However, the tie was played on carpet at the time. In Buenos Aires, with home court advantage and a clay surface, Nalbandian has the edge. Acasuso has been playing remarkably well on clay as well. With much of Argentina’s hopes lying on the shoulders of their two singles players, I expect they will deliver a win for Argentina.
