Men’s Singles - Second Round Results:
[2] F Gonzalez (CHI) d J Vanek (CZE) 63 64
J Ferrero (ESP) d J Benneteau (FRA) 76(2) 16 62
A Seppi (ITA) d R Haase (NED) 75 63
Second Round Tennis Picks:
Tennis Gambling Line: Feliciano Lopez -120 Stefan Koubek -120
Match Time: 05:00 AM EST
Tennis Prediction: The second round match between No.43 Feliciano Lopez and No. 60 Stefan Koubek marks their second meeting of this season. At the start of the season, in January, Koubek defeated Lopez in Zagreb, Croatia (Carpet). The victory notwithstanding, Koubek trails 1-2 in career head-to-heads against Lopez.
Both players are tipped at -120 on the money line, but which player is the better bet? In terms of surface, Lopez holds the advantage as he has the better hard court game, whereas Koubek favors clay. However, Koubek, an Austrian, holds home court advantage.
Which advantage will prevail in their match tomorrow? Does surface trump home court advantage? Or, is it vice versa?
Tennis Free Pick: Lopez in straight sets.
Tennis Gambling Line: Stanislas Wawrinka +145 David Nalbandian -190
Match Time: 05:00 AM EST
Tennis Prediction: This is perhaps one of the best match ups in the second round. No. 22 David Nalbandian, contrary to most Latin clay-court players, is an exceptional hard court player. Favored by the odds makers at -190, Nalbandian typically would be a good bet for the victory.
However, going against Nalbandian are several factors: tournament inactivity for over a month and a less than spectacular season by his standards. Nalbandian appears in his first tournament since the 2007 US Open. This year Nalbandian amassed a mediocre 19/16 record and in this season alone, Nalbandian has reached only one quarterfinal – the Open Seat quarterfinal in Barcelona. If Nalbandian’s season were any indication, he is not a sure play for a berth in the quarterfinal.
No. 41 Stanislas Wawrinka has had an average season, amassing a 15/20 record. Wawrinka’s best results this season came in Stuttgart (clay) and New Haven (hard). In Stuttgart, he reached the final round (lost to Rafael Nadal). In New Haven, he reached the quarterfinal (lost to Mardy Fish).
Following his run in New Haven, Wawrinka turned out a notable performance at the 2007 US Open, advancing into the R16, only to lose to Juan Ignacio Chela in a five set marathon 6-4, 2-6, 6-7(6), 6-1, 4-6.
Wawrinka has a solid hard court game, but his record for the season belies his potential. At +145 underdog odds, Wawrinka holds value.
Tennis Free Pick: Wawrinka in three sets.
