No. 13 Zvonareva won the ECM Prague Open a few weeks ago – a Tier IV clay court event. She also finished runner-up in Charleston (clay) Hobart (hard) and Doha (hard). She enters this match up with an enviable 31-7 mark for the season.

Benesova weighs in at No.83 in the World, but she is a player who spends the bulk of the year contesting clay court events around the world. She was a quarterfinalist in Acapulco and a finalist in Estoril. On the lower circuit, she won the Latina event and finished runner-up in Torhout. Although Benesova has enjoyed success on clay, her encouraging results came in minor tournaments; at a major event like Rome, and especially against Zvonareva, Benesova will be hard pressed to replicate her performances.
