Tennis Prediction: Last year betting against Federer in a match was unheard of – barely a flickering thought in the minds of most tennis bettors. Federer was the greatest. He won. And won. And won some more. (Yawn). In 2008, Federer has not looked so certain a bet, posting mixed results according to his standards. So much so that in a match that would have typically elicited a yawn at best, as a Federer victory was the only outcome possible, nowadays, has long shot pushers speculating whether they should bet against him after all. Therefore, the question is whether this is the match to dethrone Roger Federer in Hamburg.
As we have seen throughout the season, Federer has had a difficult time strolling through matches he would have in the past. Federer owns a perfect 5-0 record against Soderling; but today that seems to carry little weight as Soderling, bolstered by the success of his counterparts on the circuit against Federer, may get his day tomorrow. At +450 underdog odds, should he orchestrate the upset, banking on him would prove to be very profitable. In their five career meetings, they met once in 2008 – at the ATP Masters Series Miami. Federer got a walkover in to the R16 when Soderling retired mid-match, down 6-4, 3-0.
Soderling does not favour clay, but can play with the best of them. I expect he will give Federer a tough match, but in the end, I expect the top seed to persevere.

Tennis Prediction: This should be an interesting match in Hamburg, as Verdasco, ever the inconsistent player, takes on his compatriot Ferrer in this all-Spanish third round matchup. Verdasco, who by far enjoys his best results on clay, is at best a talented mental disaster, seesawing from event to event with mixed results. Ferrer on the other hand is more consistent, producing solid results in tournament play, typically factoring deep.
In Valencia this year, Verdasco reached the quarterfinals, where he lost to eventual champion Ferrer 6-3 1-6 7-5. Lifetime, they are tied 3-3, but Verdasco leads 3-2 on clay. The fifth seed Ferrer is favoured for the win, but last week he bombed in his opening match in Rome. So long as Ferrer keeps his focus during the course of the match he should come away with the victory.
