Safin enters the draw at the BMW Open with a lowly 4-8 mark for the year, which includes a second round exit in Monte Carlo. With such a poor tournament results thus far in 2008, underdog pushers may find value betting against Safin. However, as his opponent is Carlos Berlocq – a run of the mill player – Safin should persevere.

Tennis Prediction: Fernando Gonzalez has been absent from tournament play since the Sony Ericsson Open in Miami, where he lost to Guillermo Canas in straight sets. Over a month without any tournament matches under his belt, Gonzalez may very well be poised for an upset. He is a shaky bet for the win. If Gonzalez crashes out in his opening match, it would not be the first time. At +300 underdog odds, Dudi Sela ‘s value is too good to ignore.

Tennis Prediction: Benjamin Becker holds home court edge in this matchup, meanwhile Steve Darcis holds a 1-0 record over the German owing to a victory in Memphis earlier this year. Darcis is the bookies favorite at -240, but I like Becker’s chances on his home patch.

Tennis Prediction: In this all-German affair, the favorite Tommy Haas would be – under normal circumstances – the more likely to advance. But Haas’s form is questionable. He is coming into the BMW Open draw after retiring in the first round of the Monte Carlo Masters, down a 1-6, 0-3 to Olivier Rochus. Earlier this year, he withdrew from his quarterfinal encounter with Roger Federer in Indian Wells (his best run to date). Although his form questionable and betting against him would appear to be the better strategy, I like his chances at his home event.
