PGA Online Golf Betting – Players Championship Preview 2008
By Tim Furious
When the PGA decided to move the Players Championship, it had to perk up the online betting community’s ears. By giving the prestigious Players Tournament the month of May to itself, it made the field much more intense. With Tiger Woods still nursing his wounds after knee surgery, the tournament is wide open. Who’s your money going to be on?
Ok fine, the second-best golfer may very well be Lorena Ochoa. But what about Phil Mickelson? The loveable lefty who has been somewhat mediocre for a golfer of his stature? Well, despite him being a typical favorite in our online sportsbook, I don’t like his chances this weekend at the Players. He just hasn’t shown the gusto that has brought him the beloved reputation he deserves.
The crazy part for Phil is that the throne is primed for the taking. With Tiger on the mend, there’s no reason Phil shouldn’t have asserted himself as the official number-two in the world. And don’t give me the, “he’s second in the Official Golf World Rankings” because it doesn’t matter. Those standings are based over two years, and what’s important to the betting investor is the here and now.
If you want a PGA betting trend, then don’t bet on anyone who has won a tournament this year. Geoff Ogilvy won the WGC-Championship, while Trevor Immelman won the Masters. Adam Scott and Anthony Kim won the last two tournaments, with Ernie Els, Phil and K.J. Choi achieving victories at smaller venues. Technically that counts them out as well.
So who hasn’t won? You guessed it – Justin Rose! Ok, I’m kidding. I’m not pointing your betting nose towards that foul pile of suck anymore. It’s nothing against Rose, it’s just I’m running out of patience with him. Charles III and Sergio Garcia are still winless this year, but both have been waning in the field leaving their faithful wanting.
Whomever you decide to roll the fairways with this weekend, the truth is that the field is wide open. Nobody is seriously anointing themselves as a bonafide threat to Tiger’s crown as the man to beat. The only one who seriously can stand toe-to-toe has been Phil, and even he isn’t showing much this season. The young stud who might is Adam Scott, whose definitive win at the Byron Nelson Championship may have given him the confidence he needs to separate himself from the pack.
