PGA Golf Betting Picks – Gold 6-Pack
By Dave Golokhov
The PGA Tour swings by New Orleans this week for the Zurich Classic. Now that we know that Tiger Woods is in fact human, let’s try to get a six-pack of golfer’s that should have an easier time of things with Tiger out of the field for this week:
Retief Goosen – 18/1
Retief Goosen, who tied for second last week at the CA Championship, is making his second start at Zurich. The two-time US Open Champion switched back to his old putter, which earned him his first top-10 finish since the ’07 Masters and his second consecutive top-15 finish. Goosen finished with the second-best birdie total of the weekend (23) at CA Championship, which means he’s regained his confidence and might be ripe for an outright win.
Steve Stricker – 14/1
Steve Stricker heads into this tournament as one of the hottest golfers right now. He’s placed in the top-15 in five of the last six tournaments but considering he hasn’t finished so well previously in New Orleans, this isn’t a confident bet. 14-to-1 is still pretty good odds for a golfer who has been buzzing near the leaders for the last month. He is heading into this tournament with a head of steam – he finished the last round of the CA Championship with a tournament-best 63 in the last round, which propelled him into sixth place.
Stewart Cink – 22/1
Stewart Cink is offering some pretty good value this week at 22-to-1. He has top-five finishes in three of his last five events and considering his measurable like driving distance (T-21) and greens in regulation (11) are among the premier pack of golfers, don’t be surprised to see him win this week. He’s fifth in the FedExCup standings.
Lucas Glover – 45/1
In the last two years, Lucas Glover has finished tied for eighth and tied seventh respectively at the Zurich Classic. Considering he’s shot below 70 in seven of eight rounds at the TPC of Louisiana, 45-to-1 is a solid payoff. He has to bring it home, which has obviously been an issue, but he did finish in a tie for third in 2005. Expect him to be in the mix with Cink, Stricker and Goosen in the final day.
Ken Duke – 55/1
Seems like there are a lot of Duke-haters – particularly with their second-round exit in the March Madness Tournament – but this Duke is a much better story. Ken Duke tied for second place at this tournament last year and took a rest last week after finishing tied for sixth at the Arnold Palmer Invitational.
Davis Love III – 80/1
Here’s a long shot: Davis Love III. He’s been brutal this season but he typically lives for The Masters. He needs a good showing this week or he might not be allowed to show up for The Masters, which gives you an indication of the type of season he’s had.
He’s still a savvy veteran and used this tournament to get into The Masters in 1995 – can he do it again for an encore?
