PGA Golf Betting 2007 Frys.com Open
by Tim Furious
The PGA Tour heads to Las Vegas this weekend to tee-off the FRYS.com Open, which was formerly known as the Las Vegas Invitational. This year’s event is making headlines because it is the first year that the Shriners Hospitals for Children will take over as the main benefactor of the tournament, which has generated over $10 million for Las Vegas-area charities since 1983.
The FRYS.com Open will be hosted by the sister courses of TPC Summerlin (7,243 par-72) and TPC The Canyons (7,063 yards, par 71). Both of these courses are extremely friendly and the winner of the $720,000 prize will have to score well under par to hoist the trophy at the end of this tournament. Last year, Troy Matteson shot four rounds in the 60s en route to victory. Birdies are the only way to survive the cut. Par simply will not suffice.
Mike Weir and Scott Verplank are the heavy favorites heading in to the weekend. Weir is coming off an astounding victory over Tiger Woods at the President’s Cup in Montreal just a few weeks ago. Verplank is making his tenth consecutive appearance and has finished in the top-7 in three of those appearances.
The home crowd will certainly be cheering for Charles Howell III who attended UNLV and helped win the national title for the Rebels in 1998. Howell is a cagey underdog to bet on because of his familiarity with the courses and his acquaintance with the scorching Vegas heat.
Daniel Chopra, Charley Hoffman and Jason Gore are also threats to take Mike Weir and Scott Verplank to task. Of the three, expect Hoffman, another UNLV grad, to take them to task. The power hitter from San Diego also boasts sharp betting and fantastic accuracy.
One name to keep your eyes on is Chad Campbell who remains an outside sleeper at the FRYS.com Open. Campbell won the last tournament in the Fall Series. Campbell has excellent accuracy and putting, which boasts well for a shorter course that rewards a precise skill set. Campbell is also a UNLV graduate, so his familiarity with the course should vault him in to consideration when you are laying down your choice to win in our BetUS.com sportsbook.
While the field is littered with UNLV Rebels who will have a distinct advantage over the rest of the field, Weir and Verplank remain the favorites to win the next installment of the Fall Series. Weir and Verplank are the expected to finish in the top-2 by the end of this weekend which would offset the odds of an American taking home the prize money.
Weir has rewarded his betting faithful kindly with wins over Tiger Woods and has two top-10 finishes this season.
Hopefully the Shriners Hospitals for Children won’t be the only financial benefactor of the FRYS.com Open this weekend. You can win big as well by visiting our sportsbook and placing a bet on your favorite to win. Canadian Mike Weir will have his hands full against Verplank and the UNLV alumni decorating the field.
