PGA Furious Weekend 2008 – Wachovia Championship Preview

Golf online betting and the Players Championship are around the corner next weekend, as is Tiger’s return to the fairways, but the Wachovia Championship at the Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte, North Carolina, offers a nice tune-up in the meantime. For our PGA betting faithful, it’s also a great way to cash in on the weekend and pad the bankroll with the NBA Playoffs and NHL playoffs underway as well. When there’s money to be made, the smart betting investor is always on the ball.

With Tiger Woods still recovering from his arthroscopic knee surgery, the field is wide open and so far Adam Scott is the biggest beneficiary. Not only was he crowned at the Byron Nelson Championship last weekend, walking away with a cool $1.15 million and a bevy of points in the FedEx Cup race. Now he stands as a +1200 favorite to win the Wachovia this weekend.

Scott benefited greatly from being the top ranked player in last week’s Byron Nelson. There was no Ernie. No Phil. No Vijay. Now all those big boys are big this weekend, and that threatens Scott’s ability to post back-to-back victories. That being said, with Tiger on the mend, the Wachovia is essentially up for grabs.

Phil Mickelson is the favorite at +900 and for good reason. Without Tiger pressuring the field, this is essentially Phil’s tournament to lose. He’ll be pressured by Justin Rose at +3500 who is due for a breakout performance, and Steve Stricker at +2500.

Both Vijay Singh and Jim Furyk are +1400 to win the Wachovia Championship this weekend, but who in their right mind is stupid to bet on either of these two at the moment? They may be ranked in the Official World Golf Rankings top-10, but don’t forget that those rankings cover the past two years. Neither of these two warrant your betting attention right now. They need to start producing on a consistent basis, and Vijay needs to stop melting down on Saturdays, if they are going to deserve your betting attention.

We have fairly favorable odds on every swinger this weekend, most notably because Tiger is licking his wounds. Take a chance on any of your favorites. The Quail Hollow is a fairly even course that doesn’t threaten any single type of golfer in particular. It’s open range, until next week when He returns.
