PGA Betting - Match Play Narrows for Woods

by BetUS Staff

As the biggest names on the PGA tour continue to drop, Tiger Woods’ grip on the Accenture Match Play Championship, tightened considerably.

Phil Mickelson fell to Justin Rose who made a 30-foot par putt to halve the 15th hole, leaving Mickelson high and dry.

Jim Furyk choked big time and lost to Chad Campbell. Vijay Singh celebrated his 44th birthday by missing a 6-foot birdie on the 19th hole to lose to Stephen Ames – all while Woods had an easy time against Tim Clark.

All of a sudden, Woods’ path to an eighth consecutive PGA Tour looks a lot simpler. "I played better than I did yesterday, which is great," Woods said after making birdie on half his holes in a 5-and-4 victory. "Do a little bit of practice this afternoon and solidify some things, and tomorrow, hopefully I can play even better."

The bad news for the rest of the field is that Woods, a two-time winner of this fickle event, is too wise to look too far ahead.

Woods will face Nick O'Hern next, a short but straight-hitting Australian who beat Woods two years ago in the second round at La Costa.

Tiger may still be the favorite, but some formidable players remain, even if their names aren’t “household” ones yet.

Henrik Stenson, who won in Dubai earlier this month with Woods finishing two shots behind, is still going strong, as is Trevor Immelman, the last player to win a PGA Tour event that Woods participated in - the Western Open last July.

"I've never played a match play event where all six rounds I've played great golf," he said. "You're going to have one or two rounds where you're not going to play well. You've just got to get through those matches. Sometimes you do, sometimes you don't."

The odds are on Woods to get through whether he wants to admit it or not.
