Online Horse Wagering - Padding Your Bankroll
By Michael Dempsey
National horse racing handicapper Michael Dempsey will attempt to pad his bankroll and yours with his daily column. He will feature at least one Pick 3 or Pick 4 play from a major track along with coverage of major stakes races, longshots, and he will keep you up to date on what is happening on the circuits he covers.
Churchill Downs switches to a later post tie on Friday, first post coming at 2:45 ET. That gives everyone a chance to find an excuse to cut out of work early, which you should be doing anyway. After all, it’s Friday.
We will attempt to pad our bankroll with a favorite in today’s feature, then we will invest $24 in the Late Pick 3 from Churchill Downs.
Today's Play of the Day from Churchill Downs:
CD Race 8 Clm $5,000 (6:18 et)
#2 Carsons Regal Lady 9/5
#8 Blues Muse 15/1
#4 Annie Dugan 5/2
#10 Bellafina 5/1
Analysis: #2 Carsons Regal Lady faces easier company here after a sixth place finish versus $10K starter allowance company at Keeneland. Her last go on the main track was in the slop four back at Gulfstream, a sharp win against $10K claimers. She is 2 for 5 on wet tracks and looks well spotted here dropping in for a $5K tag. Owns a solid pace profile throughout and she will be tough here at a light price.
#8 Blues Muse returns off a 2 1/2 month break. Last out at Tampa she was outrun against $6.25K foes but won for a $5K tag two back. She has a win and a second in two trips on off going and figures to get overlooked at the windows.
Wagering
WIN: #2 to win at 8/5 or better.
EX: 2,8 / 2,4,8,10
TRI: 2,8 / 2,4,8,10 / 2,4,6,8,9,10
Churchill Downs Late Pick 3
Starting in Race 9: $1:1,2,5 / 1,7 / 3,4,6,8 = $24
CD Race 9 Alw $53,800N2X (6:50 et)
#2 Budge Man, #1 Fifty Five, #5 Marchfield
#2 Budge Man made a mild late run to finish third last out in the off the turf G3 Translyvania at Keeneland. Was coming off a sharp Alw-1 win two back on the poly at Turfway. Tries grass for the first time here unless we are washed off the grass again. This guy should take to grass, by FuPeg out of a Regal Classic mare who has dropped a couple of turf winners, two time turf winner Five Nickles ($126K) and three time turf winner Classic Neel ($137K).
#1 Fifty Five dueled for the early lead and weakened to finish fourth last out off a two month break. It was tough to win on the front on the grass at Keeneland and this guy cuts back a furlong here. He broke his maiden over the turf here last June at today's distance.
CD Race 10 Alw $50,000s (7:20 et)
#7 Hope Street, #1 Smart Rose
#7 Hope Street was a game maiden winner last out against $40K foes, prevailing by a neck. A good bounce back after getting outrun two back versus tougher at Gulfstream. She makes her third start of her current form cycle and looks capable of winning right back here.
#1 Smart Rose went gate to wire at 4/5 to break her maiden going a mile against $50K foes. Her last pair of speed figs are tops in here and she earned a fig two back going 5 1/2 that would be good enough to win here. McPeek sending out live runners here (4 for 9) and not a real tough spot to face winners for the first time. Solid off track pedigree.
CD Race 11 Md Sp Wt (7:50 et)
#8 Sterling Quality, #6 Lunar Music, #4 Ndongo, #3 Prince Hope
#8 Sterling Quality tracked the early pace while down along the inside and tired in the stretch to finish seventh in his debut on poly at Keeneland. Should appreciate the switch to grass, a half to turf stakes winners Cetewayo ($1.1 million) and Bowman Mill ($457K).
#6 Lunar Music was fifth in his debut after breaking a step slow. This guy is a half to three stakes winners, top earner Virginie ($435K). Returns with lasix added for Brothers barn that usually does not have them fully cranked first time out.
Live Longshots:
These are price plays to watch today. A small win-place wager is in order or if your pockets are deep enough, use these runners in your trifecta and Pick 3 and Pick 4 wagers. One or two of these could be the difference between a regular day at the track and hitting the IRS window with a signer.
