Online Horse Race Wagering - Bubble Horses
By Brian Mulligan
When you speak about Bubble Teams in the NCAA basketball online betting tourney it’s about a committee that decides who plays and who doesn’t but the field in the Kentucky Derby betting is limited to 20 horses and is decided by the ones with the highest career earnings in Graded races.
Astute horse bettors always are prepared and are trying to stay ahead of the curve so let’s take a look at this year’s Bubble Horses in case there will be some late changes in the 20 now eligible.
Through the major preps of the weekend of April 13, Big Truck is the first runner that may be on the outside looking in on the earnings list as he was 19th on the slate through April 22.
He is regarded now as Barclay Tagg’s second bullet as Tagg’s trainee Tale of Ekati is the king of the barn but Big Truck can run and must be considered.
Horse bettors that follow pedigree know that Truck may be stamina challenged. His sire Hook and Ladder was basically just a sprinter but on the bottom side he has a right to get the trip. His dam Just a Ginny carried her speed a mile and a quarter on grass and that is where he will draw his courage down the lane.
As far as Truck’s current form, he has some trends to buck, as does one prominent contender named Pyro. Big Truck was far back on the Polytrack in the Blue Grass last week beating only one horse to the wire and only 6 Derby winners since 1937 finished out of the money in the last start before the Derby. Since 1980 only 2 horses won the Derby after running worse than third in the final prep and both of those runners, Sea Hero and Thunder Gulch, were fourth.
Big Truck was all out for his lone Graded win and could be in very steep if he does get to the Big Dance.
In a precarious spot at 20 is the speedball Bob Black Jack, and the initial feeling he is that the only way this horse can get a mile and a quarter is on the back of a truck.
He boasts brilliant speed but was staggering like a drunk sailor when 2nd in the Santa Anita Derby and if you read in between the lines of his rider, David Flores, after a recent workout, you get the feeling he will be life and death to win on Derby Day.
He was equipped with blinkers for an April 14 work at Anita under Flores. After the work, Flores: “He worked good with the blinkers on. He went straight when he went by the other horse. Normally when he passes horses, he wants to lug in or out but he went straight, so that’s a good sign.”
At this point in time, you are looking for more than good signs.
Toward the bottom of the Graded list comes Denis of Cork, who if he had won the Illinois Derby instead of running 5th, would have been on the short list of major contenders for the Derby. Instead, he sits at 21 and will need some help.
He has the 50-year jinx against him because of the out of the money effort and his only win slightly longer than a mile came all out in the slop.
He does have a right to get the distance of the Derby as a son of hot sire Harlan’s Holiday. His dam lost her debut sprinting by a head, and then was far back in a maiden claimer but being by a Derby winner in Unbridled, she has a right to pass stamina genes on.
A half bro to Cork won long in the minor leagues and the best thing clever horse bettors can look to with Denis is that he should be a juicy price if he gets into the gate.
