Off Track Horse Wagering - Padding Your Bankroll

by Michael Dempsey

National horse racing handicapper Michael Dempsey will attempt to pad his bankroll and yours with his daily column. He will feature at least one Pick 3 or Pick 4 play from a major track along with coverage of major stakes races, longshots, and he will keep you up to date on what is happening on the circuits he covers.

We start another week attempting to place online sportsbook betting wagers to pad our bankroll, and we have good horse race betting cards on tap at both Churchill Downs and Belmont Park for today.

Today’s play of the day from Churchill Downs is a maiden race and we are going to go with a first time starter from the Steve Asmussen barn.

Then we will invest a modest $24 in the late Pick 3 at Belmont Park.

Today's Play of the Day from Churchill Downs:

CD Race 8 Md Sp Wt (4:56 et)

#2 Star of David 4/1

#10 Indeedingly 3/1

#4 Cross Village 5/1

#8 Citizen 10/1

Analysis: #2 Star of David makes his debut for Asmussen barn that is 19% winners with first time starters. Zayat runners seem to be cranked up first time out and note this guy was a $220K purchase, a good number for an offspring of Bernstein, nearly five times the average. The mare has dropped two foals to race, both winners, top earner Union Course ($124K).

#10 Indeedingly just missed in his debut, coming up a neck shy of graduating. McPeek runners used to be better second time out but barn has been on fire here and has won with 3 of 7 firsters at the meet. Barn hits at a 33% clip with second timers. Logical threat in this spot.

Wagering

WIN: #2 to win at 5/2 or better.

EX: 2,10 / 2,4,8,10

TRI: 2,10 / 2,4,8,10 / 2,3,4,8,10

Belmont Park Late Pick 3

Starting in Race 7: $1: 2,3 / 1,2,5 / 4,5,8,10 = $24

BEL Race 7 Clm $35,000N2L (4:12 et)

#2 Unbridled Refrain, #3 Steamroller

#2 Unbridled Refrain drops in for a tag and tries turf for the first time here for Jerkens barn that is 18% winners with runners trying the weeds for the first time. The colt should take to the turf, four of his sibs are turf winners including stakes winner Fortitude ($426K).

#3 Steamroller was a game maiden winner last out in his first go on turf and in his second career start. The colt has shown good early speed in both of his starts and still appears to have plenty of upside.

BEL Race 8 OClm $50,000N2X (4:45 et)

#5 Hotstufandthensome, #2 Sir Lowry / #2b Trimaran, #1 Leo / #1a Quip

#5 Hotstufandthensome trailed in the early going last out and had to steady and was forced out wide to avoid a spill,. checking in fifth in the Elkwood at Monmouth. It was his first go off a four-month break and his first go for Pompay off the claim. This guy is a stakes winner on turf who reeled off three consecutive triple digit Beyers in '06-07. Figures to move forward second off the bench and the 8/1 ML looks more than fair.

#2 Sir Lowry came up just a head short last out at Keeneland, making a good late rally in the stretch after having to steady in traffic around the far turn. Third place finisher Master Mizzen came out of the race to beat Alw-2 foes in his next start. Frankel brings him back after another break.

BEL Race 9 Clm $15,000N2L (5:17 et)

#4 Sounds Tacky, #5 Only a Vision, #8 Skipping Class, #10 Scorsica

#4 Sounds Tacky is dropping in price for the $35K level although still facing non-winners of two. She was claimed for $15K three back by Sciacca but she has not been a threat in two starts for the new connections. Those were both turf tries and at least pedigree wise this gal might be better suited for the main track. Looking for a turn around here with the surface switch and the easier spot.

#5 Only a Vision also goes turf to dirt. Was not a threat last out in her turf debut after a good second two back in the mud. She finished well after breaking slowly in that outing. Gets a decent jock upgrade to Coa.

Live Longshots:

These are price plays to watch today. A small win-place wager is in order or if your pockets are deep enough, use these runners in your trifecta and Pick 3 and Pick 4 wagers. One or two of these could be the difference between a regular day at the track and hitting the IRS window with a signer.
