Horse Betting Trends - Padding Your Bankroll
by Michael Dempsey
National horse racing handicapper Michael Dempsey will attempt to pad his bankroll and yours with his daily column. He will feature at least one Pick 3 or Pick 4 play from a major track along with coverage of major stakes races, longshots, and will keep you up to date on what is happening on the circuits he covers. Don't miss Wednesday's report where Michael will keep you up to date with track bias reports for the major circuits.
The holiday weekend continues today, which is closing day at Churchill Downs. There is plenty of stakes action to be found, so let's concentrate on taking down the winners in four of the best stakes at the Big A and Churchill Downs:
AQU Race 5 Discovery Hcp G3 (2:20 et)
#7 Now a Victor
#3 Helsinki
#2 Buffalo Man
#5 Dr. V's Magic
Analysis: #7 Now a Victor came up just a neck shy of the top spot last out in his stakes debut, a game second in the G3 Pegasus at Monmouth in the slop. Colt earned the top last out speed fig in the effort and owns a solid pace profile throughout. Drilled a bullet work on 11/17 at Laurel for sharp Maryland outfit. Colt appears to have a bright future and should pick up his first stakes win here.
#3 Helsinki exits the same race as our top pick. The colt stalked the early pace from the rail but did not have enough punch in the stretch, checking in fourth while beaten 2 ½ lengths for the top spot. Zito colt ran third two back in the G2 Brooklyn behind Any Given Saturday and Tasteyville. The latter came back with a 112 Beyer winning the G3 Sports Page on 10/27.
Wagering
WIN: #3 to win at 9/5 or better.
EX: 3,7 / 2,3,5,7
TRI: 3,7 / 1,2,3,5,7 / 1,2,3,5,7
AQU Race 7 Remsen S. G2 (3:19 et)
#2 Springs Road
#1 Court Vision
#3 Big Truck
#6 Atoned
Analysis: #2 Springs Road invades from Maryland for a sharp barn in Jenkins. The colt was a much the best winner last out against Alw-1 optional claimers in his first start against winners. His effort was flattered when the runner up Cassoulet returned to beat Alw-1 foes on 11/10 at Laurel and the fourth place finisher Free Dubai did the same on 11/14. Colt is a half bro to stakes winner Babaganush ($198K). Figures to get overlooked on the tote and I don't think we have seen the best out of this colt yet.
#1 Court Vision came from off the pace to win the G3 Iroquois last out going a one turn mile at Churchill Downs. There appears to be enough early zip in here that he should come running late again. Colt is a half to six winners including a couple of stakes winners, top earner Garcia Marquez ($804K). Only real knock is the likely short price.
Wagering
WIN: #2 to win at 4/1 or better.
EX: 1,2 / 1,2,3
TRI: no play
CD Race 9 Golden Rod S. (3:28 et)
#3 Turn Away
#6 Morakami
#1 Pure Clan
#5 Sunday Holiday
Analysis: #3 Turn Away looked super in her debut, drawing clear to trounced her rivals by 9 1/4 lengths and she was no secret at the windows, sent off as the chalk in the field of 11. She is by Empire Maker out of the Known Fact mare Averti ($30K), who has dropped seven other foals to race, six winners including one stakes winner. She has plenty of pedigree to handle the stretch out to two turns. The filly has put in a couple of good works since her debut for Frankel barn that is 18% winners with second timers and 27% winners moving runners from sprint to route.
#6 Morakami makes her first start since a fifth place finish in the G1 Alcibades. She was rank early and sent up to force the early pace, took over the lead briefly and weakened to finish fifth, catching a poly surface that was favoring outside stalkers and closers. $225K purchase is by FuPeg out of the stakes winner Astrid ($242K), her first foal to race. She is in good hands with Arnold barn and looks capable of moving forward off her last start. Her 10/1 ML looks fair enough but I sure would have felt better seeing a published work since her last start.
Wagering
WIN: #3 to win at 2/1 or better.
EX: 3,6 / 1,3,5,6
TRI: 3,6 / 1,3,4,5,6 / 1,3,4,5,6
CD Race 11 Ky Jockey Club S. G2 (4:27 et)
#8 Blackberry Road
#6 Cool Coal Man
#1 Anak Nakal
#5 Racecar Rhapsody
Analysis: #8 Blackberry Road made a good late rally to finish third last out in the G3 Ky Cup Juvenile. The colt was reserved early while saving ground and had to steady when shuffled back entering the stretch. Two back the colt was squeezed and bumped coming out of the gate and was not a threat in the G3 Arl. Wash. Futurity. This guy has not been around two turns on dirt and has posted a couple of very quick works over the surface here. Like the pedigree, by Gone West out of the stakes winner Strawberry Reason ($153K) who has dropped six winners including Vindication ($680K). Can pull off the upset here.
#6 Cool Coal Man prompted the early pace and drew clear late to a good looking win against Alw-1 foes in his first start against winners was an impressive maiden winner two back at Del Park where he trounced the field by 10 1/4 lengths and was flattered when both the runner up and third place finisher came back to graduate in their next starts. #1 Anak Nakal was a decent second last out in the G3 Nashua in his first go against winners, finishing 6 1/2 lengths behind the gate to wire winner over a main track that was more favorable to horses on or near the lead that day. Plenty of pedigree on this guy to handle two turns.
Wagering
WIN: #8 to win at 9/2 or better.
EX: 6,8 / 1,5,6,8
TRI: 6,8 / 1,6,8 / 1,3,5,6,8
