Off Track Betting - Padding Your Bankroll Friday November 9
By Michael Dempsey
National horse racing handicapper Michael Dempsey will attempt to pad his bankroll and yours with his daily column. He will feature at least one Pick 3 or Pick 4 play from a major track along with coverage of major stakes races, longshots, and will keep you up to date on what is happening on the circuits he covers. Don't miss Wednesday's report where Michael will keep you up to date with track bias reports for the major circuits.
We had two of the three winners in Thursday's Pick 3 ticket, getting knocked out in the third leg as my third choice won the race and we only went two deep. Not a big loss, as the payoff was just $67.00.
Today's Pick 3 ticket has more promise. We'll invest $32 today and take a good look at the Scoot Stakes at the Big A:
Today's Featured Race of the Day:
AQU Race 7 Scoot S. (3:16 et)
#6 Bachata 3/1
#4 Featherbed 5/1
#11 Queen Joanne 5/2
#14 La Presse 12/1
Analysis: #6 Bachata was off a step slow and made a good late rally splitting horses in the mid stretch to finish in the runner up spot last out in the G2 Valley View at Keeneland. That snapped a four race win streak for the filly which included the $80K Twin Lights two back in NJ. Should be able to run this group down today as the likely favorite.
#4 Featherbed was bumped coming out of the gate and made a good late rally to finish in the runner up spot in the PG Johnson in her turf debut going five furlongs. Plenty of pedigree for this filly to handle her first go around two turns. Pletcher is 26% winners moving runners from sprint to route and the filly gets an upgrade in jocks to Johnny V. Barn back in a funk however, starting off the meeting here 0 for 12.
Wagering
WIN: #6 to win at 2/1 or better.
EX: 4,6 / 4,6,11,14
TRI: 4,6 / 4,6,11,14 / 4,6,9,11,14
Churchill Downs Late Pick 3
Starting in Race 8: $1: 1,7,8,9 / 2,3,6,7 / 8,9 = $32
CD Race 8 Alw $50,000N1X (4:04 et)
#1 Glee Club, #8 Curvature, #7 Gold Bells Spin, #9 Trick N Skip
#1 Glee Club adds the hood and tries turf for the first time for red hot Wilkes barn. The Nafzger assistant has won with 5 of 8 starters at the meeting. Gelding has a decent turf pedigree, by Deputy Minister out of the turf stakes winner Beautiful Noise ($517K), who has dropped one other foals to race, three time turf winner Verismo ($44K).
#8 Curvature was a good second last out over the poly at Keeneland, beaten a length for the top spot. Was down along the inside much of the trip, day the inside was not the place to be. Gelding makes his third start of his current form cycle for another hot barn that is 17% winners with horses making their first start on turf.
CD Race 9 Alw $50,000N1X (4 :34 et)
#7 Democrat Taxes, #3 Minewander, #6 Spritely, #2 Magger Bags
#7 Democrat Taxes came up just a head short of graduating last out after heading for home with the lead, drifting out in deep stretch and then finished gamely when righted by jock. Like the jock switch here to Albarado. #3 Minewander exits the G1 Alcibades where she raced down along a dead rail. Two back she was third in the G3 Arl. Washington Lassie at Arlington. She will appreciate the drop into the allowance ranks although she catches a pretty good group here.
CD Race 10 Md Sp Wt (5:03 et)
#9 Bianchi's Boy, #8 Good Request
#9 Bianchi's Boy figures to be fitter second off the bench for Romans barn. Colt made a mild late run to finish fourth last out. The stretch to a route should suit and this guy ran in a couple of highly graded races last year including running into Zanjero and Grasshopper in the maiden ranks. He finished off his year by missing wining the Md bred Juvie Championship on MD Million Day by a neck.
#8 Good Request was fourth in his debut, beaten four lengths for the top spot going two turns on turf. Frankel is better second time out and is 26% winners (with a +ROI) moving runners from turf to dirt. Colt is a half to $2.3 million earner Skimming.
Live Longshots:
These are price plays to watch today. A small win-place wager is in order or if your pockets are deep enough, use these runners in your
trifecta and Pick 3 and Pick 4 wagers. One or two of these could be the difference between a regular day at the track and hitting the IRS window with a signer.
