Hockey Betting Action – Wednesday Night NHL
by Dave Golokhov
New Jersey Devils (30-20-3) @ Buffalo Sabres (24-21-7)
The Buffalo Sabres have shot out of a canon since the All-Star and have now won four of their last five games (their only loss came in a shootout).
The key for the Sabres has been their defense. In their four wins they have yielded a total of four goals.
On Wednesday, they’ll face an NHL team that epitomizes “under” as the New Jersey Devils head to HSBC. The Devils have gone under in 26 of their 43 games this year and that’s after the over had a hot stretch – five of the last six Devils games have gone over.
23 of the last 35 meetings between the two teams have played under
FreePick: Buffalo
Washington Capitals (25-24-5) @ Philadelphia Flyers (30-17-5)
The Washington Capitals needed overtime to dispose of the Columbus Blue Jackets on Tuesday night but they probably won’t even get there on Wednesday night.
The Capitals enter a gun fight with a knife as they face the streaking Philadelphia Flyers. The Flyers are 14-3-1 in their last 17 games.
The problem for Washington is that they don’t have much supportive scoring for Alexander Ovechkin, who leads the NHL in scoring. Meanwhile, the Flyers roll three scoring lines and might be adding Peter Forsberg to the equation soon.
So far, the Flyers are 2-0-1 against the Capitals this season after getting swept in the season series last year.
FreePick: Philadelphia
Chicago Blackhawks (23-24-5) @ Edmonton Oilers (24-26-5)
The Edmonton Oilers finish up a four-game home-stand on Wednesday night as the Blackhawks visit.
The Oil is 4-1-0 in Chicago’s last five trips to the Rexall Centre and they’ll look to keep their dominance up as the Blackhawks have lost four straight games.
But at closer glance, two of the Blackhawks losses in their last four came to the San Jose Sharks, a team they struggle to beat. They also lost to Colorado and Columbus – two teams in the playoff picture.
Edmonton did stomp the listless Calgary Flames 5-0 but was outscored 7-1 in two losses prior to that.
The Blackhawks offer decent value as an underdog.
FreePick: Chicago
Colorado Avalanche (28-21-5) @ San Jose Sharks (29-16-7)
With their win against the Chicago Blackhawks on Saturday, the San Jose Sharks moved over .500 at home for the first time this season.
While the Sharks struggle at home, the good news is that the Colorado Avalanche struggle on the road. The Avs are 4-14 on the road this season when the total is set at 5.5 and 14-28 in the same situation over the last three years.
San Jose is 4-1-0 straight up against Colorado over the last three years in meetings at the Shark Tank. The Sharks have won four of their last five games while the Avs have lost four of their last six, which indicates that the Sharks dominance should continue.
FreePick: San Jose
