Hockey Betting Action - Islanders Look for Weekend Wins

The New York Islanders won five of their last six games of 2007, but 2008 has not been kind to the team. That means if you made some money doing NHL betting on the Islanders in December you probably gave that all back if you kept with them in January.

New York, though, has at least been able to pick up a few points this month – instead of just losing, they’ve mostly been losing in overtime. The Islanders began January with a 4-3 OT loss to the Panthers, and followed up that result with a 2-1 OT loss to the Avalanche. They then fell 4-0 to Edmonton in regulation, and 3-2 to the Canucks in OT.

Ted Nolan’s club will be trying to snap that losing streak on Friday night when they continue their four-game trip through Canada with a game in Calgary against the Flames. Calgary has played well so far in 2008, and both forward Jarome Iginla and defenseman Dion Phaneuf were announced this week as starters for the All-Star Game.

Three other games are on the NHL’s schedule for Friday night, including St. Louis at Columbus and Minnesota at Chicago. Vancouver goalie Roberto Luongo was voted to the All-Star Game as well (he’ll skip the contest); his club will battle Phoenix on Friday.

There are two games on the schedule for Saturday afternoon, with Philadelphia hosting Boston at 1:00pm ET and Dallas paying a visit to Los Angeles at 4:00pm ET. The rest of Saturday’s action takes place at night, with eight more games on the schedule including New Jersey at BuffaloMontreal at the RangersColorado at Carolina, Pittsburgh at Atlanta, Tampa Bay at Florida, Nashville at Columbus, and then Toronto at San Jose.

The marquee Saturday contest, however, sees the Detroit Red Wings in Ottawa to take on the Senators at Scotiabank Place. The Wings and Sens have big leads in their respective conferences, and this matchup could be a preview of the Stanley Cup final.

Ottawa is back in action again on Sunday, as they’ll play host to the Islanders. Philadelphia will take on the Capitals in Washington on Sunday afternoon, and there’ll be six more games later that day including Colorado at Florida, Vancouver at St. Louis, Phoenix at Minnesota, Chicago at Nashville, Calgary at Edmonton, and San Jose at Anaheim.
