NFL Wagering: Buy and Sell Week 5

by Tim Furious

The NFL betting season is starting to balance out as the weak are weeded out of the colossal rubble that remains. San Diego continues its free fall as other perennial powerhouses showed that you can't win games on reputation alone. Some teams are climbing, other teams are falling. Let's get to the BetUS's Buy and Sell for Week 5.

BUYING

Seattle Seahawks (3-1 SU, 3-1 ATS)

The problem with the Seahawks is that there's nothing sexy about them. Shaun Alexander, even as the touchdown machine of 2005, isn't an explosive game breaker. Matt Hasslebeck is solid, but never seems to take over a game. But the one thing they do is win and stay consistent.

In this division, that might just be enough. I'm not sold on the Arizona Cardinals just yet because Ken Wisenhunt knew the Steelers inside and out. But the rest of the division is awful. The Niners are a bust and the Rams are the worst team in the league. The Seahawks are playoff bound due to a weak division and that has to count for something.

Next game: Seattle vs. Pittsburgh (-6)

Kansas City Chiefs (2-2 SU, 2-1-1 ATS)

Whomever saw the Chiefs destroying the Chargers like that in the second half just cashed in big time! For all the flack that I've been giving the Chiefs for being the worst overall team, they obviously haven't deserved it. A tilt against Jacksonville will tell us all we need to know before you go betting your hard earned money in our NFL futures.

What else to like about the Chiefs? If Herm can get Larry Johnson to get back to his form from last year (remember he missed all of training camp) and Damon Huard to play steady and mistake free, then the Chiefs have a chance at this division. The Raiders are in a hole still, the Chargers are an absolute mess and the Broncos just got tooled in back-to-back games. Don't look now, but Dwayne Bowe just submitted his Rookie of the Year candidacy.

Next game: Jacksonville (-1) at Kansas City

SELLING

Baltimore Ravens (2-2 SU, 0-4 ATS)

How many times can I sell the Baltimore Ravens? This team is still running on the fumes of its reputation. Experts are pegging them in the top-15 of the league, and I'm not sure why. The hallowed defense has been getting rocked, allowing 22.5 points per game, good enough for eighteenth in the league.

The Ravens have been killing their betting faithful by going winless against the spread. Sure they might get things back on track against a lowly San Fran team that's starting Trent Dilfer, but how are you going to feel safe with any long term betting investments stowed away in this Ravens nest?

Next game: Baltimore (-3) vs. San Francisco (3)

Chicago Bears (1-3 SU, 0-4) ATS)

Turns out it wasn't Rex Grossman's fault. Whether it's the play calling, the route-running, the offensive line, or the injuries on defense, the Bears have been an abysmal disappointment thus far. Worse yet, they've been blown away against the spread. Pretend like you keep your betting dollars in a picnic basket, and stay as far away from the Bears as you can.

Next game: Chicago vs. Green Bay (-3)

Philadelphia Eagles (1-3 SU, 1-3 ATS)

The Eagles were contenders on the basis that Donavan McNabb could play at the elite level we are accustomed to seeing him play. The fact he couldn't run away from the guy selling hot dogs should tell you all you need to know. No marquee receiver. Now they don't even seriously have a marquee quarterback.

They luckily have a bye week to rethink things, but oddsmakers will take that bye week to reassess where the Eagles stand, most likely putting them as underdogs no matter who they face. The Eagles are a stout example of why a lack of depth at key offensive positions means terrible things in the NFL.

Next game: BYE WEEK
