NFL Wagering - Week 2 Re-cap

No matter what you might think of Bill Belicheat, the New England Patriots might be the best NFL team to come around in a long, long, time.
They are simply awesome. What they did to the San Diego Chargers last Sunday night is inexplicable. The BetUS future wager odds on the Patriots to win the Super Bowl, currently at 5 to 2, is an overly. That’s right, 5 to 2 is an overlay for the Patriots to win the Super Bowl. They are too good offensively, defensively, and on special teams for any other team in the NFL to beat them. The Indianapolis Colts have an outside shot, but it is more outside than most NFL bettors think.
The BetUS lines-maker has gotten whiff of the Patriot’s superiority by installing them as a –16.5 against the spread favorite versus the Buffalo Bills at home in their game this coming weekend. That’s 16.5 points and, no, the New England Patriot’s did not switch conferences to the Pac-10. That’s an amazingly high spread for an NFL game, but, you know what? The Patriot’s have a good chance of covering that - - a very good chance. They’re that good.
The Indianapolis Colts had trouble even winning their game versus the Tennessee Titans. The line in that one was Colts –8.5 against the spread. The way they dominated in the week before, on opening day versus the New Orleans Saints, forced the opening line of -7.5 to move a full point in the Colts’ favor. However, the Titans, with an improving defense and run game, played the Colts tough and shattered the spread by losing to the Colts by only 2 points, 22 to 20.
This weekend, the Colts are –7 against the spread versus the Houston Texans. The Texans are at home and are coming off an excellent win versus the Carolina Panthers. This is a line to watch as the Texans might be a surprise team this year. Then again, maybe the Colts bounce back and do to the Texans what they did against the Saints in Week 1. Only time will tell!
Speaking of the New Orleans Saints - - what’s going on with these guys? They shelled out tons of money to sign Jason David away from the Colts to play cornerback, they worked hard in the heat at a training facility in Mississippi and now they can’t find the end zone. Not only that, but their defense is getting beaten up and down the field like they play in the WAC. It’s embarrassing, not only as a Louisianan, but as an NFL fan. They just look bad. They do, however, get a chance to play at home for the first time this season and they get to play against last year’s worst defensive team - - the Tennessee Titans. Will that be enough? The BetUS line has the Saints as a –4 against the spread favorite at home versus the Titans. Obviously, the BetUS lines-maker doesn’t feel that the Saints are as bad as they have shown in their first two games. Maybe, the lines-maker is right, then again, maybe the Saints won all of those games last year purely because of emotion. Who knows?
The Oakland Raiders have been installed as -3 against the spread favorite, at home, versus the Cleveland Browns. After their loss, due to what I would consider “bush-league” tactics by Denver Coach, Mike Shanahan, last Sunday, the line is exactly where it should be. The Raiders are good and the Cleveland Browns offense isn’t as good as it showed versus the Cincinnati Bengals. This game will be determined by how well the Raiders bounce back from an emotional loss.
The Dallas Cowboys, after their win on the road versus the Dolphins, are getting +3 on the road versus the Chicago Bears. The Bears beat the Kansas City Chiefs last Sunday and it will be interesting to see how the line on this game moves during the week. Dallas has shown little desire on defense and every NFL bettor knows what a great quarterback Rex Grossman for the Bears is. What will the over/under end up in this one? Pay attention to both lines, the over/under, currently at +/- 42 and the BetUS against the spread betting line, in this game. It could determine who you wager on.
Until next week, good luck!
