Bet on NFL – Niners to Regress in Seattle
By Russell Edward
It is amazing that, at 2-6 and on a six-game losing streak, the San Francisco 49ers would be right back in the hunt for the NFC West division title with a win this weekend in Seattle. Last year, the Niners won both games against the division champs, but they have faltered this season mostly due to an inefficient offense that is sorely missing last year’s offensive coordinator, Norv Turner, who left the coach the San Diego Chargers. It is for this reason that the NFL betting line for the game this week in Seattle has the Niners as ten-point road dogs.
San Francisco 49ers +10 @ Seattle Seahawks –10
The Niners had a good week running the ball last week with star running back Frank Gore sitting out. Maurice Hicks and Michael Robinson combined for 116 yards against Atlanta and the offensive line did a good job of blocking. They will have to do the same this week and will likely focus their rushing to the left side, behind Jonas Jennings and Larry Allen.
Alex Smith will have to read the Seattle defenses to beware of Seahawks linebackers Julian Peterson, a former Niner, and Lofa Tatupu, as they are excellent at jamming run lanes and are very fast.
If San Francisco can establish the run by sticking to it, using all three rushers with Gore back, they should be able to at least stay on the field long enough to give their normally anemic offense a chance to put some points on the board. Between the three backs, if they can get 40 touches, the Niners could be in a good position to at least cover this large spread and bring in the cash to their football betting fans.
As far as the passing game goes, Alex Smith is not going to put up big numbers on the Seattle defense. To get anything going at all, we will see short passes for short yardage, trying to set up third and shorts to give the running game a chance to excel. Smith’s offensive line is not good at containing the pocket, so Smith will have short three and five-step drops and will have to make quick reads and accurate throws. He won’t get many opportunities to throw deep, and the chances of him being picked off when he does are high, as Seattle will be playing very aggressive up front and will be close to the ball all day.
Considering how poorly the San Francisco 49ers gave been executing on offense so far this season, this does not bode well for betting on the Niners.
