Football Betting - New Orleans (-4.5) vs. Atlanta (+4.5)

The Saints and Falcons clash in the Monday Nighter. Whoop-dee-doo. One team, the Saints are 5 and 7. The other team, the Falcons are 3 and 8.

Does this game mean anything? Actually, it does. The Saints have an outside chance to grab a Wild-Card spot and make the playoffs. The Falcons are starting Chris Redman at quarterback. Redman actually did okay versus the St. Louis Rams last week.

That means that the Saints will probably make him look like the next coming of Joe Montana in this one. The Saints have a tendency to do that. They were playing against third-string Buccaneers’ quarterback Luke McCown last week and made him look like Dan Marino. So, Redman will look like Joe Montana.

Actually, the Falcons may not need Redman to look like Joe Montana in this game:

The New Orleans Saints are 2 and 6 against the spread against a team with a losing record.

The New Orleans Saints are 4 and 11 against the spread in their last 15 games overall.

The Atlanta Falcons are 2 and 8 against the spread in their last 10 home games.

If this were a New Orleans home game, where the Saints give up games like it’s free bottles Hurricanes from Bourbon Street, then it would be a no-brainer. The Falcons would destroy the Saints in the Superdome, but this isn’t a New Orleans home game.

Not only that, but, save for one of the dumbest calls in the history of coaching - - the double-reverse in the last three minutes of the game - - versus the Tampa Bay Buccaneers last week, the Saints would have won and would be one game behind the Bucs for the NFC South crown.

Not so. The Saints find themselves having to beat the Falcons on the road. The Falcons are their arch-nemesis, but will have trouble against a Saints team that, when they put it all together, can do very well.

Which Saints team will show up? I’ll be betting that it’s the one that beat the Seattle Seahawks on the road and not the one that lost the St. Louis Rams at home.

The BetUS NFL betting line is New Orleans Saints (-4.5) against the spread on the road versus the Atlanta Falcons.

My money will be on the Saints to cover that football spread.
