Tom Brady, winner of three Super Bowls as a member of the New England Patriots, posted figures of 3529 yards passing and 24 touchdown passes last season, and there are a few reasons he may be able to approach the 4000-mark this year, easily surpassing those '06 figures.
The Pats, who always seem to make the judicious personnel moves, reached out and got Brady what he did not have a lot of last season - receivers. Added to the roster in '07 are Donte Stallworth, a go-to receiver with New Orleans and Philadelphia; up-and-comer Wes Welker, who had 67 catches for Miami last year; and Randy Moss, one of the best big-play wideouts in recent history - who may feel a bit constrained by an offense based on shorter passes than he was used to with Daunte Culpepper, but who has been known to turn a short gain into a long one.
Last season Brady had a crew of receivers that was pedestrian to say the least. In fact, the leader, Reche Caldwell, had 750 yards and four touchdowns. But T.B., purportedly a proud papa now by way of actress Bridget Moynahan (but that's another story) made it work pretty well. This is a testament to his abilities, and the Pats were a whisker away from being in Super Bowl XLI. Even so, it was a good thing Brady got help from his two-fisted running duo of Corey Dillon and Lawrence Maroney.
New England might not be able to rely on the running attack like it did last year, as Dillon is gone, and furthermore, there are some injury worries surrounding Maroney's shoulder. That might mean more passing plays from Brady, who is going to win any way he can. Look for an increase in passing yards, which will look more like '05 (4110 yards) than last year. Topping last year's total of 24 touchdown tosses is very possible.
When they finally make the movie about Brady's life, is there any doubt Matt Damon will play the lead?
