Until he got the Seattle Seahawks to the Super Bowl, Matt Hasselbeck was on the verge of becoming known as a quarterback who could put up attractive numbers, but couldn't move his team too far in the playoffs. Until the NFC's Western Division gets a lot better, Seattle is going to be considered a Super Bowl contender on a more consistent basis - that means much more pressure on Hasselbeck. Last year he suffered knee and shoulder injuries, missing four games, and the absence of Shaun Alexander for six games had an effect on him as well.

The result was an off year where Hasselbeck completed less than 57% of his passes for 18 touchdowns and 15 interceptions. That was a far cry from his stats in the Seahawks' NFC championship year, when his ratio was 24-9 and he threw for 3459 yards. Yet Seattle won its first-round playoff game over Dallas before losing in Chicago.

It is no secret that Hasselbeck has benefited from the tutelage he's received from Seattle coach Mike Holmgren, who had enough confidence to draft him when he was in Green Bay and bring him to the Emerald City with him. Holmgren has had a way with QB development, and Hasselbeck has justified his faith.

There are some changes in Seattle's offensive makeup this year. Things are in a bit of flux. The offensive line suffered a lot of injuries last year and will be hard-pressed to return to 2005 levels. Darrell Jackson was traded to the San Francisco 49ers. Jeremy Stevens, a tight end who could make some plays but had a lot of legal troubles off the field, left for Tampa Bay after being released.

The Seahawks go into the year with Deion Branch as the #1 receiver, and that's good news for Hasselback. So is the fact that there are some underrated wideouts he'll also be working with, like D.J. Hackett and Nate Burleson. The bad news is that Hasselbeck will have to demonstrate that he is over the injury problems. If he gets banged up a little more, he will sit out some time, and you know what that will do to his totals.
