Vince Young certainly had a rookie season to remember. The original intention on the part of Tennessee Titans coach Jeff Fisher was to sit Young for a while and let him learn by watching a veteran. But Billy Volek was disgruntled when Young was brought aboard, and was dealt during the last week of training camp. Kerry Collins, who was acquired right before the start of the season, proved ineffective. Young was therefore pressed into service early, and his Titans were left for dead.

But lo and behold, Young, using every resource at his disposal, literally willed his team into contention for a playoff spot. His passing statistics were not outstanding, as he hit on just 51.5% of his passes with more interceptions (13) than touchdowns (13). But he found a way to win, and did that in no small measure based on what he could do with his feet. Young gained 552 yards and 6.7 yards per carry and bailed his team out of countless situations.

He still doesn't have the help he needs. The Titans lost Drew Bennett and Bobby Wade from their receiving corps, and will be looking for Reggie Bush's USC running mate, LenDale White, to take some of the pressure off Young in the backfield. Fortunately, there is crafty offensive coordinator Norm Chow around, and Young's future development could be in worse hands.

I'm sure Fisher and Chow would like for Young to settle down a little more and throw from the pocket - for the sake of self-preservation more than anything else. He has exhibited a tendency to take off before letting a play take shape, but maturity should help to cure that.

However, with those personnel losses in the wide receiver corps, and a rushing attack that is far from settled, Young may find himself in a position where he is forced to make more plays on his own. Look for an increase, albeit not a huge jump, in his rushing stats, and more yards through the air that will come as a natural result of more starts and continued progress as a passer.
