NFL Prop Betting – Phillip Rivers Odds

If there was an NFL quarterback who was clearly on the spot last year, it was Phillip Rivers. After all, he had made headlines by holding out of training camp after being drafted, which essentially jump-started the career of Drew Brees. Then the San Diego Chargers handed the job over to him as soon as Brees gave them a convenient excuse to do so (the labrum injury). Naturally it was going to be put-up-or-shut up time for Rivers. To the surprise of many, the North Carolina State product, who had thrown just 17 passes in two previous NFL seasons, came through with flying colors, completing nearly 62% of his passes for 22 touchdowns and just nine interceptions on the way to a Pro Bowl appearance.

So the question is, will he progress in terms of his individual statistics in 2007? The answer would appear to be "yes," although within the parameters of his situation, one would not expect numbers to increase exponentially.

There are two things that may have a tendency to hold Rivers' yardage statistics down. One is that there is a prominent fact of life, which is that LaDanian Tomlinson is going to rush for a lot of yardage. LDT’s rushing will take the San Diego offense a long way. The other is that Rivers doesn't really have the kind of arm that is going to throw deep a whole lot. He's never been advertised like that.

On the other hand, it is true that new Chargers head coach Norv Turner is considered to be less conservative than predecessor Marty Schottenheimer, and he is also renowned for his work with quarterbacks like Troy Aikman. San Diego drafted wide receiver Craig Davis in the first round out of LSU, and Antonio Gates, the Pro Bowl tight end, might be split to the outside a lot more this season.

What's interesting is that Rivers threw for 22 touchdowns in the same year Tomlinson scored 28 TD's on the ground. Assuming Tomlinson isn't going to have another year where he breaks the NFL record, this looks like a season where Rivers could improve on his stats in that department as well.
