NFL Online Football Betting - Two-Round Mock Draft
By Brian Vornberg
1. Miami Dolphins - Glenn Dorsey (DT, LSU)
- After the team’s accidental slip-up in choices of words at this week’s press conference, one has to think that the pick will be on the defensive side of the ball. I could definitely see Parcells being high on a guy like Dorsey. Then again, this could all be a big “smoke screen” in order to stir up the rest of the draft. The Dolphins do hold all the power with the number one pick, after all. As with every year’s draft, we’ll have to wait and see.
Other options: Jake Long, Vernon Gholston, Chris Long
2. St. Louis Rams - Chris Long (DE, Virginia)
- There is some speculation that this pick could be traded for more picks later on in the first and second rounds, however, the team likes Long a lot if they don’t hear any trade offers worth pursuing. He could be a dominant force opposite Adam Carriker on the defensive line.
Other options: trade, Jake Long
3. Atlanta Falcons - Jake Long (OT, Michigan)
- With the retirement of Steve McNair, it’s a possibility that the Ravens will try and move to this spot to assure themselves of Matt Ryan. The Falcons do need a quarterback, however, so it wouldn’t be a surprise at all to see them take Ryan here. I am a firm believer that they would rather get a solid tackle like Long here and settle for a guy like Joe Flacco or Chad Henne in the second round.
Other options: Matt Ryan
4. Oakland Raiders - Vernon Gholston (DE, Ohio State)
- I personally don’t believe that Gholston is quite worthy of going this high, but a lot of teams like his athleticism and physicality. The Raiders’ dream scenario would be to pick up the son of former Raider great himself Howie Long here, however, I don’t think he will still be around.
Other options: Darren McFadden, Ryan Clady
5. Kansas City Chiefs - Ryan Clady (OT, Boise State)
- The Chiefs will almost surely be taking a tackle here to help protect future QB Brodie Croyle. It’s just a matter of who their highest on besides Jake Long as he will almost assuredly be gone by this point.
Other options: trade, Matt Ryan, Sedrick Ellis
6. N.Y. Jets - Darren McFadden (RB, Arkansas)
- The Jets would love to take a shutdown corner here, but there aren’t really any worthy of going this high in this particular class. They’re also in love with Vernon Gholston, but he’ll be gone already so they’ll end up getting maybe the best talent in the draft in McFadden.
Other options: Derrick Harvey, Quentin Groves
7. New England Patriots - Quentin Groves (OLB, Auburn)
- I’m guessing that the Patriots will probably trade this pick, simply because they are the Patriots, however, they do love to draft versatile players that can fit there system, and with Bellichick’s coaching, Groves could be a major force in his rookie campaign.
Other options: trade, Leodis McKelvin, Mike Jenkins, Aqib Talib
8. Baltimore Ravens - Matt Ryan (QB, Boston College)
- If Ryan is still here then you can pencil this pick in, but if he’s not then they will be taking an offensive tackle which they will need in order to protect the quarterback which they will be drafting in the second round.
Other options: Branden Albert, Jeff Otah, Sedrick Ellis
9. Cincinnati Bengals - Sedrick Ellis (DT, USC)
- The Bengals would love for this pick to fall their way. They’ve been dreaming of picking up Ellis since day one and there’s a decent possibility that he could fall to this spot unless someone else like New Orleans wants him badly enough to trade up and snag him, which could be a possibility. There are plenty of defensive needs to address so either way the pick will be on that side of the ball.
Other options: Keith Rivers, Phillip Merling
10. New Orleans Saints - Leodis McKelvin (CB, Troy)
- Keith Rivers will be considered here, however, the Saints are wetting their mouths to get a true shutdown corner and McKelvin is the closest thing to that. There are basically 4 or 5 corners who are all around the same grade this year, however.
Other options: Mike Jenkins, Keith Rivers, Aqib Talib, Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie
11. Buffalo Bills - Derrick Harvey (DE, Florida)
- The defensive end position for the Bills is somewhat perceived as a strong spot, however, it’s not as strong as most are led to believe. Behind Aaron Schobel there is virtually no depth so it’s a very good possibility that the Bills will take the best defensive end still available at this point and that would be Harvey. Defensive tackle and a bigger wide receiver are also options here.
Other options: Kentwan Balmer, Devin Thomas, Limas Sweed, Trevor Laws
12. Denver Broncos - Jeff Otah (OT, Pittsburgh)
- The Broncos have many, many needs to fill, but shoring up their offensive line for that Mike Sherman running attack should be first priority.
Other options: Chris Williams, Branden Albert
13. Carolina Panthers - Rashard Mendenhall (RB, Illinois)
- The Panthers are going to break the hearts of thousands in Chicago and Detroit by stealing Mendenhall for themselves. It will be extremely tempting to take a defensive end here, but with DeShaun Foster gone and DeAngelo Williams not proving he can carry the load for the Panthers, Mendenhall would be a superb pickup.
Other options: Phillip Merling, Calais Campbell
14. Chicago Bears - Branden Albert (OT, Virginia)
- With their hometown boy Rashard Mendenhall gone at this point, the Bears will look to help give Grossman better protection and help Benson to find some holes. The offense has to be priority numero uno for the Bears here.
Other options: Chris Williams, Gosder Cherilus, Jonathan Stewart
15. Detroit Lions - Jonathan Stewart (RB, Oregon)
- With the Lions already doing well to address their cornerback needs in the off-season, it won’t be absolutely necessary for them to take one here. They will hope that with the depth of corners in this draft they can get a steal in the second round.
Other options: Phillip Merling, Calais Campbell
16. Arizona Cardinals - Mike Jenkins (CB, South Florida)
- The Cardinals will most likely take a good value corner here and then a solid running back to be groomed along by Edgerrin James in the next round.
Other options: Felix Jones, Aqib Talib, Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie
17. Minnesota Vikings - Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie (CB, Tennessee State)
- With the best defensive ends taken at this point, expect the Vikes to settle and wait until the second round to get their end prospect.
Other options: Lawrence Jackson, Calais Campbell, Phillip Merling
18. Houston Texans - Aqib Talib (CB, Kansas)
- The Texans will be very tempted to bring Talib back to his home state of Texas to help out the other guys in the defensive backfield. He has possibly the best football instincts of any corner in this class.
Other options: Chris Williams
19. Philadelphia Eagles - DeSean Jackson (WR, California)
- Donovan McNabb needs help and the Eagles would be wise to give it to him in the form of “Mr. Electricity” himself. Eagles also need help at safety, but will surely be able to find that in the second and third rounds with this year’s group.
Other options: Kenny Phillips, Tyrell Johnson, Limas Sweed, Devin Thomas
20. Tampa Bay Buccaneers - Devin Thomas (WR, Michigan State)
- Thomas is an ideal choice here for a team with aging receivers and he has experienced a west-coast style of offense in college.
Other options: Early Doucet, Limas Sweed
21. Washington Redskins - Phillip Merling (DE, Clemson)
- The Redskins will struggle with the idea of picking up a wide receiver here, however, will not be able to pass up on Merling who will still be available. The receiver class is deep and the Redskins can look forward to picking up a quality guy at that spot in the next round.
Other options: Early Doucet, Limas Sweed
22. Dallas Cowboys - Felix Jones (RB, Arkansas)
- It almost seems as if Jones was meant to go here. The Cowboys could really use a change-of-pace back here to go alongside improving power back Marion Barber.
Other options: Reggie Smith, Limas Sweed
23. Pittsburgh Steelers - Gosder Cherilus (OT, Boston College)
- The Steelers will turn to a guy who knows how to protect big, important quarterbacks. Defensive end is another position that could be addressed here as well.
Other options: Chris Williams, Lawrence Jackson, Calais Campbell
24. Tennessee Titans - Limas Sweed (WR, Texas)
- This would be a huge pickup for the Titans. Re-uniting the chemistry of Young and Sweed could end up being a lethal combination that has been overlooked by many.
Other options: James Hardy, Malcolm Kelly, Early Doucet
25. Seattle Seahawks - Dustin Keller (TE, Purdue)
- The Seahawks could really use an athletic tight end after Jeramy Stevens has seemingly dropped off the face of the universe after their Super Bowl season.
Other options: Martin Rucker, Martellus Bennett
26. Jacksonville Jaguars - Calais Campbell (DE, Miami, FL)
- The Jaguars need help all along the defensive front and Campbell would be an ideal fit simply because he has the frame and the ability to gain weight and move to the inside if needed or lost weight and continue to play on the outside.
Other options: Lawrence Jackson
27. San Diego Chargers - Chris Williams (OT, Vanderbilt)
- The Chargers clearly need a right tackle and Williams is still available, so he would be ideal. The Chargers could also look at a versatile defensive back such as Reggie Smith out of Oklahoma, however.
Other options: Reggie Smith, Kenny Phillips, Tyrell Johnson
28. Dallas Cowboys - Early Doucet (WR, LSU)
- This pick is assuming that the Cowboys end up getting Pacman Jones in a trade with the Titans. If they feel like that trade isn’t going to happen, then expect them to pick a corner such as Brandon Flowers or Antoine Cason here. Doucet is a great character guy who is an extremely tough runner after the catch and has great hands.
Other options: Reggie Smith, Brandon Flowers, Antoine Cason
29. San Francisco 49ers - Malcolm Kelly (WR, Oklahoma)
- Despite Kelly’s less than desirable attitude and workouts lately, he is still a huge receiver with playmaking abilities, something that the 49ers desperately need to go along with Vernon Davis. Keith Rivers would also be a great value pick here.
Other options: James Hardy, Keith Rivers, Tony Hills, King Dunlap
30. Green Bay Packers - Brandon Flowers (CB, Virginia Tech)
- Flowers would be a much needed option here for the Packers. He is a tough minded corner who has the mentality and toughness to play the corner position in the less-than-ideal conditions of Lambeau Field in the winter.
Other options: Reggie Smith, Kenny Phillips, Antoine Cason
31. New England Patriots - pick forfeited
32. N.Y. Giants - Tyrell Johnson (S, Arkansas State)
- Johnson put on a show at the NFL Combine and had some of his best games of his senior season against the toughest competition that the Indians faced all year. He looks like a great fit for the Super Bowl champions.
Other options: Keith Rivers, Antoine Cason, Reggie Smith, Jerod Mayo
