NFL Odds – Chicago vs. Green Bay

by Tim Furious

Last season Brett Favre scorched Chicago’s (+3) feared defense in what many thought was his last game. Well, much to the chagrin of the listless Bears, Favre is back and as good as ever. The surprising Packers (-3) are the new kings of the NFC North, a crown that the Bears desperately want back.

Chicago Offense vs. Green Bay Defense

Chicago has an offense? Really? You wouldn’t tell by the looks of things. Even with Brian Griese at the helm, Chicago just can’t seem to get things going. We all knew the offense wasn’t that great, but it has been shockingly awful this season. They have given the ball away 14 times (9 interceptions, 5 fumbles) which is the most of any NFL team.

To make matters worse, Cedric Benson is not the back that they were hoping he was. He lacks breakaway speed to beat defenders to the edges and comes up short when asked to power through tight gaps. Chicago only manages 82.8 yards on the ground, and the ball is terrifyingly unsafe when they try to throw.

That spells good news for the Packers defense. A.J. Hawk’s bunch is ninth in the league in total defense and will certainly have no problems making life a living hell for Benson and Griese. The Green Bay Packers allow 232.3 passing yards and 106.3 rushing yards per game, and they play exceptionally well at home.

Green Bay Offense vs. Chicago Defense

Chicago was once of the most feared defenses in the league. Now it’s a joke. They’re 21st in the league, allowing 321.3 yards per game and an astounding 23.8 points per game. Their rushing defense has been decent, but their secondary got obliterated last weekend against Detroit.

The Packers have the worst rushing attack in the league with DeSean Wynn and Brandon Jackson running the ball. They average an embarrassing 54.3 yards per game. But that’s fine since Brett Favre has played nearly mistake free. He has 1,205 yards already with eight touchdowns and two interceptions. The Packers average 288.8 yards per game.

Lambeau field will be on fire while they welcome their hero, and new all-time touchdown king, Brett Favre, back home. Favre will play conservatively, but he has always been comfortable at home. Chicago won’t pressure him to have a huge game since they will struggle to put up points on the scoreboard.

Favre is having fun and spreading the ball around. Donald Driver is his main target, but Greg Jennings has emerged as a great second receiver and the two should have a fine day against a tattered Chicago defense that has been decimated by injuries.

Sports Betting Trends

-Chicago is 0-4 ATS

-Green Bay is 4-0 ATS

-Green Bay is 1-4 SU in its last 5 home games

-Chicago is 4-2 SU against Green Bay in their last six meetings

Final Verdict

The Bears are absolutely lost right now. The running game left with Thomas Jones. The passing game has never been there. Now the defense is failing them as well. At least they have Devin Hester. Green Bay is simply playing far better football right now. It will be hard to get Chicago motivated behind Brian Griese at Lambeau Field on Sunday. The Packers vaunted defense should shut down Chicago, making life easy for Brett Favre as he continues to cement his legend as the new touchdown king.
