NFL Furious Opinion 2008 Offseason Offensive Upgrades
by Tim Furious
The NFL free agent marker has been moving fast. Here’s a quick look from our end at BetUS.com as to some great offesason moves, and some seriously questionable ones. Which teams are taking one step forward, and which teams are taking two steps back? Take a look.
Jerry Porter (WR) – Jacksonville Jaguars
Perhaps my favorite dark horse trade of the off-season was the Jags signing Jerry Porter. Reggie Williams was the leading receiver with a modest 38 catches for 629 yards and 10 touchdowns. But that is considered by many to be a freak year. Other than that, Williams, Matt Jones and the entire Jaguars receiving corps have been a bust.
Enter Porter, a smart, strong, incredibly fast, do-it-all receiver with lots left in the tank and everything to prove after an abysmal 705 yard season in Oakland that was capped with a weak mark of only 6 touchdowns. With David Garrard, the most efficient passer in the game, hurling the pigskin his way, Porter could emerge as a true play making force like he was used to. Can you believe if him and Moss both become Pro Bowlers after leaving Oakland? I would demand to sign with Oakland and then leave just to make myself better.
And I love the Jaguars chance as a Wildcard in our NFL futures. They won’t beat Indianapolis (well, they might), but the addition of Porter to this offense makes them a fearsome unit that can balance out the insane aggressiveness of their stalwart defense.
Defensive Line, Derek Anderson, Donte Stallworth – Cleveland Browns
Hello 49ers of 2008! Keeping Derek Anderson was the smartest move, but reeling in the speedy Donte is a huge mark for this offense. Braylon Edwards and Kellen helped this unit finish with the eighth best offense overall. They had 25.1 points per game and 351.3 yards. Donte’s arrival allows Braylon to return to his rightful spot as an underneath possession receiver, opening up one-on-one ops for Kellen.
And any addition to the defense is positive. They were the worst defense in the league last with 359.6 yards against per game. Now that they have a stiffer defensive line, everything else will fall in to place.
Randy Moss (WR) – New England Patriots
I’ll just call it a smart move on both sides. Randy had a career year with 22 touchdowns, an NFL record that eclipsed the great Jerry Rice, and it would’ve been boneheaded (to say the least) for him to leave Brady and Uncle Bill.
What I’m more concerned with is the emotional stability of one Daunte Culpepper, who Moss flirted with right before signing with the Pats. That’d be like your super cool, blistering hot ex-girlfriend calling you up, telling you she wanted to be all yours again, and then going back to the stud she’d been dating for the past year leaving you in a pool of your own disenchanted misery. Daunte should take one of his patented party cruises just to make himself feel better. He deserves it.
Bryant Johnson (WR) and Isaac Bruce (WR) – San Francisco 49ers
Last year the Niners were the darlings of the NFL off-season after finishing 9-9 SU in the regular season. During that year, they were a huge betting underdog that rewarded those smart enough to back them. Unfortunately, if you stayed on that bandwagon through last season, you got burned.
Now Bryant Johnson and Isaac Bruce are being brought in to stabilize a receiving corps that did absolutely nothing last year. And, sorry to say, but Mike Martz is going to have an insanely tough time molding an offense with a cardboard offensive line, a shaky quarterback whose confidence is beginning to wane and a receiving corps of zero superstars (pardon me, Vernon, don’t you have an Under Armor ad to go film?). Don’t get fooled this year by backing the Niners so eagerly in our NFL futures.
Michael Turner (RB) – Atlanta Falcons
I love that Turner finally got paid. But all the speed and Jerious Norwood in the world won’t help you if you don’t have a quarterback who can take pressure off of him.
The Richest Guys In The World (ALL) – New York Jets
All the signings in the world won’t matter if Mangini can’t figure out how to get this offensive generating point. And spending a billion dollars on new guys, while simultaneously pissing off everyone who’s already in your locker room, is just nifty for team chemistry. All that I know is that the J-E-T-S betting fans still know that these guys S-U-C-K.
Julius Jones (RB) – Seattle Seahawks
If Shaun Alexander couldn’t run behind this line, what in hell makes you think that JJ can? And who gets excited about T.J. Duckett these days? Have you seen him play in the last three years? C’mon. I can’t wait till some idiot drafts him as a “sleeper” in my fantasy draft. “You’ll see! Touchdown vulture!” The only thing this guy is vulturing, along with JJ, is the hope of the Seattle betting faithful who think this playoff bound suckfest of a team is due for anything special.
