The Kansas City Chiefs, who have rehabilitated themselves with their NFL betting backers, will go after their third win in a row on Sunday (1 PM Eastern time), when they play host to the Jacksonville Jaguars on the grass surface at Arrowhead Stadium. The NFL betting odds at BetUS have the Jaguars installed at -2, with an over/under figure of 36 points.
The Chiefs started out like a team sleepwalking, as they scored 13 combined points in losses to Houston and Chicago, gaining 500 total yards. But then they defeated the Vikings 13-10 and last week came back from a 16-6 halftime deficit to score 24 unanswered points and beat San Diego 30-16. The Chiefs gained 390 yards in that one, easily their season high. Kansas City is now 2-2 SU (straight-up), 2-1-1 ATS (against the spread), and have played three unders in four games.
Jacksonville is 2-1 SU and 1-2 ATS this season, playing two unders in their three games to date. The Jaguars last played on September 23, winning at Denver 23-14 as a three-point underdog. In that game they held Denver to just 47 yards rushing.
In the HEAD-TO-HEAD betting trends:
* J'Ville has won four of the last six meetings SU
* Four of the last six meetings have gone under the total
These teams played in last season's finale; the Chiefs won 35-30 at home as a 2.5-point favorite. The game of course went over the total of 36.5 points. Kansas City went on to the playoffs, where it lost at Indianapolis, while Jacksonville stayed home.
Kansas City is still averaging just 14 points a game, but there are some signs of life. Larry Johnson, who missed almost all of training camp, ran for 123 yards against San Diego last week, while QB Damon Huard, who won the job virtually by default in the pre-season over Brodie Croyle, threw for 284 yards and two TD's, albeit with two interceptions. Kansas City has yet to attain a rushing touchdown, but have only given up two rushing touchdowns to the opposition. Also:
* KC has own seven of its last eight home games SU
* KC is 11-3-1 ATS in its last 15 at home
* KC has played four of its last five at home under the total
* KC is 7-1-1 ATS last nine as a home dog
It should also be noted that in Kansas City's last 11 games against AFC South opponents, the straight-up winner has also covered .
Jacksonville has gone with David Garrard from the outset as its quarterback. Garrard has responded with a QB rating of 103.8, passing for three TD's and throwing 75 passes thus far without being intercepted. The Jags have had a harder time running ball this year, however, averaging just 3.8 yards a carry. On offense Jacksonville has had to gain 20.9 yards per point, although the defense has averaged 25.4 yards per point, which is outstanding. Jacksonville has yielded 288 yards a game, the fourth-lowest total in the league. Also:
* J'Ville is 1-5 ATS in its last six games
* J'Ville has covered three of his last 10 road games
* J'Ville is also 3-7 SU in its last ten road games
* J'Ville is 0-4 ATS its last four as a road favorite
The technical figures show that Jacksonville is not at its best away from home. And the Chiefs have regained some strength as a home underdog. So it looks like the tech edge would go to Kansas City, the two-point underdog on the BetUS betting line.
