San Diego Chargers (1-0) vs. New England Patriots (1-0)
Sunday, September --- Gillette Stadium, Foxborough --- 8:15pm EST
Opening Football Line: New England -3.5 (47)
Preview
Everyone should send the schedule makers cases of beer right now, because we should all be thankful for this epic Sunday Night game. LaDanian Tomlinson. Tom Brady. Shawne “Lights Out” Merriman. Randy Moss. Bill Bilichek! Norv Turner! Ok, that last one was a stretch.
The last time these two met, the Patriots won 24-21 in a tight playoff contest. Something happened at the end of the game that pissed LDT off, and he will be looking for revenge this Sunday night when the Chargers clash with the Patriots.
San Diego Offense vs. New England Defense
Tomlinson goes from the
Bears to the Patriots. Fantastic. The vicious and intelligent front seven of the Pats won’t be able to shut LDT down like the Bears did so look for Tomlinson to get back on track.
The key for San Diego’s offense is Philip Rivers taking advantage of the big play. Even against the Bears ferocious defense, he managed 190 yards, but tossed an interception. Bilichek’s defensive schemes are impossible to read and nobody plans for a quarterback better than Bilichek (with or without cameras).
New England Offense vs. San Diego Defense
Uh oh. Here comes Randy Moss! Tom Brady had all sorts of time throwing against the Jets as his offensive line gave him tremendous protection. He could’ve set up shop and made a sandwich back there while rifling 297 yards and three touchdowns. While he won’t have the same time to take reads while Merriman and Shaun Phillips harass him in the backfield, Brady is a cerebral assassin and can still shred this weak secondary to pieces.
Nothing will get going for the Patriots if Laurence Maroney can’t drop the hammer in the rushing attack. Due to the aerial assault of Brady last week, Maroney only managed 72 yards on 20 carries, which is decent, but not nearly good enough against a stiff and unrelenting Chargers front seven.
New England’s offensive line will have its hands full, but is well coached and talented enough to hold them off for the majority of the match as Maroney busts through bus-wide gaps and Brady sets up shop hitting Moss for another big game. To put it simply, with Stallworth, Welker (6 catches, 61 yards, 1 touchdown) and Big Ben Watson complimenting Moss, Brady has too many weapons for the San Diego secondary to hold down.
NFL Betting Trends
-San Diego is 15-6-1 ATS in its last 22 games on the road
-New England is 61 ATS and SU in its last 7 games
-total has gone OVER in 6 New England’s last 7 games
-New England is 4-1 in its last 5 games when playing San Diego at home
Final Verdict
Both teams have incredible defenses, so the game really comes down to which team has the better offensive attack. Phillip Rivers is decent, but has not made a believer of me yet. LDT will have his hands full against New England’s staunch defense and Brady looks unstoppable.
Football is a game of great coaching minds, and Bill Bilichek is the best coach in the game. Norv Turner is a great offensive mind, and has some exciting weapons, but the New England offense is simply too strong for San Diego to keep up with. I’d bet on Bilichek over Turner any day of the week. His Brady/Moss combo trumps the sensational skills of Tomlinson.
