Football Betting Week 13 – Jaguars Visit Colts
by Russell Edward
The Jaguars have been hot as of late and it could not be happening at a better time, as this game against their division rivals could decide who wins the AFC South. Under Jack Del Rio, the Jags have often played tough against the Colts, but have failed to pull off a victory when it is most needed. On the hot seat at the start of the NFL betting season this year, Del Rio could solidify his resume if he can get his squads to play a tight game and beat the defending Super Bowl champs in their house.
Jacksonville Jaguars +7 at Indianapolis Colts –7
Del Rio’s choice to drop starting quarterback Byron Leftwich a week before the season started now looks like a stroke of genius. His trust in David Garrard has been growing each week as Garrard continues to play smart, relatively turnover free ball. This week, Garrard and crew will start off with a heavy dose of their two star running backs, Fred Taylor and Maurice Jones-Drew. The two combine for an awesome ground attack that can leave defenders tiring very quickly as they try to adjust to the two very different, yet effective styles of running.
The Colts style of defense, the Tampa 2, is very disruptive to receivers and they will force Garrard to have to keep an eye on his slot receiver, Dennis Northcutt. When the running game gets itself established and Northcutt gets open for a couple quick catches, the defense will play up a bit, which may open something down the side, on play action, for Garrard to hit his tight end, Mercedes Lewis, deep.
The Colts will want to get Addai going on the ground early, but his success will largely depend upon the health and timing of his offensive line, as he is not the most powerful of runners. He is very smart and cuts like no one’s business, however, and the Jags will not be able to take the Colts running game lightly.
Marvin Harrison is back this week, after fighting off a knee injury for what seems like an eternity, and must feel even longer to Mr. Manning. Look for Peyton to re-establish his great working relationship with the all-pro as soon as he can get away with it. That means the first coverage mistake the Jags make will be the window Peyton is waiting for. If he and Harrison connect right away, it could give Indy the boost they’ll need to cover this seven-point football betting spread.
