NFL Betting – 2007 NFC South Preview

Atlanta Falcons

What to love: That we don’t have to read or hear about Michael Vick’s personal problems for at least another season. They are +800 to win the NFC South, the worst odds in the division, so if you’re feeling a tad bit adventurous, then go for it.

What to hate: Joey Harrington. The only good game he had was against the Cincinnati Bengals defense, easily one of the worst in the league. He has no reliable weapons, aside from Alge Crumpler, and Warrick Dunn is losing his legs.

Falcons fans should chalk this year up to a rebuilding process under a new coach in Bobby Petrino, and should hope for Brian Brohm in the NFL 2008 Draft. Falcons betting investors should keep their betting dollars safe with any other team in this division (yes, even the Bucs).

Carolina Panthers

What to love: David Carr looking like he will start by week four. You can even bet on this in our NFL Futures!

What to hate: The David Carr versus Jake Delhomme battle is going to leave this offense in disarray. The Panthers showed no punch in the preseason on the offensive side, and three lopsided losses proved that the defense has some obvious problems as well.

New Orleans Saints

What to love: Absolutely everything. From the coaching to the special teams, this team has everything you need. Their schedule is nominally weak, and they are looking at a possible 13-3 season. They are the favorites in our sportsbook to win the division at -180 for good reason, and they are a definite favorite to reach the NFC Championship game. They are +400 to win the NFC.

Reggie Bush is in for a monster year, while Drew Brees will continue to cement his place amongst the top-5 quarterbacks in the league.

What to hate: Perhaps too much expectation. What am I talking about. There is very little not to like about this team. Their corners are the only weakness on the defense, but then they went out and had the best passing defense in the preseason.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers

What to love: A renewed offensive line looked great, and Cadillac Williams is absolutely due for a bounce back year. This team has zero expectation on their shoulders after going 4-12 last season, so the ninja-like acquisition of B.J. Askew is going to blow holes so wide that Cadillac could be a school bus and still get through them.

This team is young and old on defense, and the recent acquisition of Jeremiah Trotter gives them the depth at linebacker that could switch them from a 3-4 team with the weakness of their defensive ends. The Bucs are a huge sleeper team and you should definitely take advantage of their favorable odds while you can. At +500 to win the NFC South and +2500 to win the NFC might be stretching it, but crazier things have happened in the NFL. The last time this Buccaneers team made a run, nobody had them on their radar.

What to hate: All the uncertainty. Gruden’s hot seat might as well be the sun because if this year goes awry, he is in deep trouble. Can Garcia succeed in this offense without the weapons he enjoyed in Philadelphia?
