NFL Betting – 2007 AFC East Preview

Buffalo Bills

What to love: You’ve got to hand it to the Bills. After they went ahead and stood by Rob Johnson (who they preferred over Doug Flutie back in the late 90’s), Buffalo pretty much put its head in the sand.

But J.P. Losman is ready to turn things around. After a few years of toiling and rocking the worst facial hair since Kyle Orton, Losman is ready to seize the day. In the preseason he flashed confidence, poise, scrambling speed and a dash of moxy. The Bills will only go as far as Losman can.

What to hate: Sure you might be saying “At +1200 to win the division, this is a steal!” But until Tom Brady and Bill Bilichek retire, the Bills will be a long shot to even make the playoffs. An unfavorable schedule and a tight division makes the playoffs a fantasy for Buffalo, despite what I am forecasting as a 9-7 season for them.

Miami Dolphins

What to love: The comedy of the coaching and quarterbacking in Miami. Cam Cameron (How does he get away with having virtually he same first and last name anyways? Who does he think he is?) handed the coaching responsibilities to Dom Capers in the final preseason game so he could assess talent. Between Cameron and Saban, I’m convinced the Dolphin’s front office has no idea what to look for in a coach.

Not that I hate the Dolphins or Trent Green, but Miami simply can’t catch a break at quarterback. Their last five have included A.J. Feeley, Sage Rosenfels, Daunte Culpepper (the epically bad version), Joey Harrington and now the 37 year old Trent Green. Green does not look like the Green of old and was simply awful in the preseason. The silver lining is that his platinum streaks will be complimented by a great south beach tan.

What to hate: Everything the offense has to offer. Chambers is being exposed as an overrated receiver, Ronnie Brown can’t find room behind that terrible offensive line and Trent Green is getting booed in his own stadium. The oddsmakers were being generous when they handed them +1000 odds to win the division (there should be an extra zero).

New England Patriots

What to love: Virtually everything. Tom Brady has thrived with bottom feeders at receiver, and now he has Donte Stallworth, Wes Welker and Randy moss. The defense lost Rodney Harrison and Richard Seymour, but the way analysts describe Adalius Thomas, he can play four positions all at the same time. So they should be fine.

What to hate: Besides another Patriots Superbowl victory and endless slow motion clips of Tom Brady? Randy Moss and Stallworth are as injury prone as the next, with both having major hamstring troubles that remain unresolved. But other than that, the only thing to hate is the steep, unprofitable odds of them winning the Superbowl at +250.

New York Jets

What to love: The running game is going to be infinitely improved this season with Thomas Jones, who remains underappreciated for whatever reason. Don’t believe it? He is the real deal, and will help Pennington and the Jets receivers by garnering the vast attention of the defense. The Jets had a top-10 rushing attack in the preseason.

What to hate: I don’t trust Chad Pennington. Yes, he was the most underrated passer of the second-half last year, but that shoulder of his is so iffy that I have virtually no faith. The Jets are misleading because they had a lax schedule last year. This year they have the sixth most difficult, another reason they are +4000 to win Superbowl XLII, let alone make the playoffs at +400.
