NASCAR Betting - Kobalt Tools 500

Race Day: March 9, 2008.

I sure hope we don’t have as many crashes this weekend in Atlanta as we did last weekend in Las Vegas. Seeing a big burly guy like Tony Stewart take his ass into the wall and then stumble out of his car wasn’t all that interesting. I hate the caution flags. I really hate it when, after a long day, the winner of the race, in this case Carl Edwards, loses points for committing an infraction. Gee, thanks, NASCAR. It doesn’t help me any that I had money on the second place finisher, Kyle Busch, in last week’s race in Vegas. Bummer.

Anyhow, the Kobal Tools 500 is at a different track, and, therefore, provides a different set of opportunities for the BetUS NASCAR bettor. As always, I will try and stay away from the obvious players, or at least I will stay away from those players who have low odds.

Here then are the drivers I think have the best chances this Sunday, based on BetUS odds of course:

Jimmie Johnson – BetUS odds + 575 - - Jimmie won this race last year. I don’t see why he can’t do it again. The odds are on the low side, but he’s not the favorite in this thing. That means that I can put money on him and be comfortable that I didn’t bet the chalk. I like Jimmie in this race if only because he was awfully pissed about the track in the UAW-Dodge 400 last Sunday. Jimmie thought the track wasn’t ready. Hopefully, those sour grapes will lead to Jimmie putting in a monster run this Sunday in Atlanta.

Ryan Newman – BetUS odds + 3300 - - Terrific BetUS odds on the Daytona 500 winner. He also won the pole in this race last year. That makes him a player this year. I like the fact that he has sort of gone out of favor with NASCAR bettors in the past two weeks. That means big odds. Big odds on a good drive are what we want went betting NASCAR.

Tony Stewart – BetUS odds + 1000 - - Stewart will be out there to prove that having to get into an ambulance was just an anomaly and that he’s still a tough-guy. At 10 to 1 he’s a good bet this weekend. The Toyota cars have been traveling well. It’s only a matter of time before one crosses the finish line first.

Kyle Busch – BetUS odds + 850 - - Kyle’s odds are lower than Tony’s this week. I think that might be a first. In any case Kyle should break-through soon. He’s looked like a winner in every race this year.

Clint Bowyer – BetUS odds + 3000 - - Clint is a good driver in a good car who hasn’t really done as much early this season as some folks expected. At 30 to 1, I have to take a hard look at him. Sometimes a driver just starts to get good for no other reason then it’s his time to get good. I think that could happen for Bowyer this weekend.

Mark Martin – BetUS odds + 3300 - - Why not put some money on a proven driver with exceptional odds? Things change in NASCAR from week to week. Martin has been underperforming so far this season. Is this the weekend when Martin starts to put things together? If it is, then that 33 to 1 looks awfully nice, doesn’t it?
