MLB Betting - San Diego Padres vs. Chicago Cubs
by Mike Rose
The Padres won a rare road game last night to even up their season series with the Cubs at a game apiece. Former Cub Shawn Estes got off to a rocky start allowing a lead-off home run to LF Alfonso Soriano, but settled down after that only surrendering three runs total (two earned) and seven hits in 5 1/3rd innings of work to secure his first victory in two plus years. MLB bettors can recoup their losses on the Cubs last night by getting their betting action down tonight in the third game of this four game set. The Padres now stand (15-25) overall after Tuesday nights rain soaked victory at Wrigley, but still boast one of the leagues worst road marks at 7-15 overall. The Padres still find themselves 9.5-games in back of the division leading Arizona Diamondbacks after they got the best of Colorado Tuesday night. MLB bettors are currently aware that San Diego is in the red overall with losing marks both home and away, but they have a great shot at handing the Cubs another home defeat with their ace on the mound. However, the Cubs have smashed right-handed pitching in the “comfy confines” to the tune of a .305 batting average. They’ve been a tremendous sports wager at home of late cashing their backers tickets 12 of the last 16 times, and they still own a one-game lead over both the St. Louis Cardinals and Houston Astros for the top spot in the NL Central.
Jake Peavy stands 4-2 with a 2.47 ERA and 1.08 WHIP in eight total starts this season. The Padres are 4-4 overall whenever he’s toed the bump, and they’re 2-1 in his three road starts. Overall, he’s allowed 41 hits and 15 earned runs with a K/BB ratio of 52/18 in just over 54 total innings of work. He’s had problems on the road though with his ERA jumping to 4.58 and he’s allowed 21 hits and nine earned runs in just under 18 total innings of work. Peavy’s dominated the Cubs throughout his career sporting a 3-0 mark with a 2.10 ERA and 1.23 WHIP in five starts. The Padres are 4-1 overall whenever he’s started for them against Chicago.
Opposing him will be left-hander Ted Lilly who seems to have turned his season around after getting off to a brutal start. He’s 3-4 overall with a lofty 5.24 ERA and 1.30 WHIP on the season, but he’s been fantastic throughout his last four starts against the D’Backs, Cardinals, Nationals, and Mets. He’s allowed 17 hits and seven earned runs in 26 total innings of work throughout that stretch, and the Cubs won three of those four starts. At home, Lilly is 2-2 with a 4.18 ERA and 1.14 WHIP. He’s had success against the Padres in his career going 3-0 with a 0.77 ERA and 0.73 WHIP. With San Diego hitting just .209 against lefty’s this year, his success just might continue in this spot.

San Diego is 1-8 the L/9 times they’ve been installed underdogs with the lone victory coming last night, and they’re 3-13 their L/16 as a road pup. However, the Cubs are 0-5 in Lilly’s L/5 starts against a team with a sub .500 record, and 1-6 the L/7 times Lilly was installed the favorite.
