MLB Betting - New York Yankees vs. New York Mets
By Robby Maddux
Tonight, the New York Yankees (18-21) and New York Mets (26-14) battle as the cross-town rivalry Subway Series opens for a three-game interleague series at Shea Stadium.
Since interleague play began in 1997, the overall series has pretty much split. The American League has the slight edge over the National League, going 1,250-1,202 over the past ten seasons.
Last season the AL won the interleague series 154-98 and only three NL teams finished above .500 against American League opponents.
Looking to continue AL success for the Yankees is left-hander Andy Pettitte (2-2, 2.68 ERA) who is 5-0 with a 2.43 ERA in 12 starts against the Mets since the start of the 2000 World Series. His numbers against the Mets include a 2-0 record and a 2.90 ERA in five starts with Houston over the three previous seasons.
As a Yankee, Pettitte is 5-2 with a 3.63 ERA in ten starts against the Mets during the regular season. His last start in the Subway Series was on June 20, 2003.
In his last outing, he gave up two runs and nine hits in 7 1-3 innings as the Yankees lost 2-1 to Seattle on Sunday.
The Yankees are coming into the series as losers of five of seven games, scoring two runs or less four times in that span.
The NL East-leading Mets trail the regular-season series between the teams 32-22 after the teams split six games last season. Oliver Perez (4-3, 3.00) will take the mound for the Mets in hopes of improving on their record against the Bronx Bombers.
The left-hander is coming off his best start this season, giving up one run and two hits while striking out six batters in 8 1-3 innings to beat Milwaukee 9-1 on Sunday.
Perez has made two starts against the Yankees, going 1-1 with a 5.40 ERA and allowing ten walks over 11 2-3 innings. This will be his first appearance against them since 2005.
The Mets enter this edition of the rivalry as favorites at -165 to win the series. However, the Yankees are slightly favored to win Game 1 at -110. The Yankees are 7-3 in their last ten interleague games as a favorite.
