MLB Baseball Betting Action - Chicago Cubs vs. Colorado Rockies
By Mike Rose
Chicago picked up its 10,000th all time victory in dramatic fashion last night when they upended the Colorado Rockies by a 7-6 final count in 10 innings. Lefty Rich Hill had been cruising along up until the sixth inning when he allowed a lead off HR to Clint Barmes to cut the lead to 3-1, but then allowed a single after that and was quickly yanked. He ended up allowing three hits and two earned runs throughout the duration of his start. Reliever Michael Wuertz relieved him and quickly lost the lead allowing two hits and two runs to the only batters he faced. After Sean Marshall retired the only batter Lou Piniella wanted him to face, Troy Tulowitzki ended his 1-for-17 slump with a three-run bomb giving the Rockies a 5-3 lead. However, the Rockies bullpen came up lame once again for the fourth straight game when Aramis Ramirez launched a two-run blast into the right field bleachers to give the Chicago Cubs a 6-5 lead with two outs in the top of the 9th. The blown save was Manny Corpas’ second in a row and fourth in eight opportunities this season. The drama didn’t end there though as Kerry Wood blew his second save of the season when he gave up a single to pinch hitter Scott Podsednik with two outs and a triple to Ryan Spilborghs to tie it up right after. The Cubs kept the pressure on in the top of the 10th though, and Ryan Theriot came up with a huge two-out single to allow the Cubs to reclaim the lead. Carlos Marmol slammed the door shut in the bottom of the inning earning himself his second save of the season.
The win was the Cubs sixth in a row and they’re now 9-1 their L/10 overall. At 15-6 on the year, the Cubs are perched atop the Central Division standings two-games ahead of the second place Milwaukee Brewers. The brutal loss was the Rockies fourth in a row, and they’re 5-5 in their L/10. They currently find themselves in a logjam at the bottom of the NL West 6.5-games in back of the division leading Arizona Diamondbacks.
Looking to keep the Cubs mojo rising will be Jason Marquis whose coming off a dominating start against the Pittsburgh Pirates last Saturday. He threw six innings of six-hit ball and allowing one earned run with a K/BB ratio of 7/1. His sinker was nasty that day, and he’ll need it this afternoon at Coors to keep a peeved Rockies club in check. He’s 5-3 with a 3.94 ERA and 1.314 WHIP in nine career starts against Colorado, and he won his lone start at Coors last season allowing five hits and one unearned run in 6 2/3rd innings of work. The Cubs have won all three of his starts this season.
The Rockies most dependable pitcher in ‘08 has been Aaron Cook. To date, the Rockies are 3-1 when he’s gotten the start. He’s 2-1 with a 3.12 ERA allowing just 20 hits and nine earned runs in 26 innings of work. He picked up a win his last time out at Houston by keeping the Astros bats in check through seven innings allowing four hits and two runs (1 earned). In his career against Chicago, Cook’s 2-1 with a 2.14 ERA and 1.429 WHIP.
The Rockies opened up –130 home favorites with the ‘total’ set at 10 for the final game of this short two-game set. You can get down on both the ‘side’ and ‘total’ at BetUS.com right now!!!
